JOSEPH GILLET NOYES, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE NEW HAVEN CLOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRIC CALL-BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,808, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed July 25, 1887. Serial No. 245,170. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J osEPH GILLnr NoYEs, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Electric Call-Bell, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
One object of my invention is to combine an electrical call-bell with'a stationary handtapping bell; also to provide an improved removable dust-cover for the mechanism, upon the top of which the bell may be carried, so as to be removed with the cover to give free access to the mechanism.
The invention consists in combining the clapper of an electric hell with ashell or dustcap, made in one piece, surrounding the armature and the electro magnet, the clapper projecting through said dust-cap. This dustcap carries the bell, which is rigidly secured thereto. The said bell is also provided with a second clapper, which may be operated by hand.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of myimproved call-bell, taken on the line 70 70, Fig. 2; and Fig. 2 is a top view of the call-bell.
A in the accompanying drawings represents the base of my improved call-bell. Secured to the base A is the electro-magnet B and armature O, suitably constructed and connected to a push-button and battery by the wires 1), in any suitable manner. The electromagnet B and armature O are protected from the air and from dust by means of a casing or cover, D, which surrounds same, and which cover is secured to the base A in any suitable manner, but preferably by means of pins 6, which project from the base A, and which pass into the slotsf in the cover D, as shown. The cover D is made in one piece, closed at the top and open at its lower end, as shown. The armature G carries a clapper, E, which projects through a slot in the top of the cover D. This clapper will be vibrated by passing a current through the electro-magnet B, thereby attracting and repelling the armature Gin the ordinary manner. A bell, F, is carried 011 the cover D by means of. a post, G, rigidly secured to the cover, to which post G the bell is suitably secured. The bell F is in close proximity to clapper E. Another clapper, H, is pivoted to a projection on'the post G, as at h. The clapper H is operated by means of a sliding rod, I, which passes into the hollow post G and bears against the end of clapper H in said post; or t}? clapper H may be operated by hand in 3th r suitable manner.
The rod I has secured upon its projecting end outside of the bell F a button, i. The bell F may be rung by pressing on the button 2', which communicates motion to the clapper H. From this it will be seen that the bell may be rung by the electrical clapper E from a distance, and can also be rung by the clapper H, acting as an ordinary callbell. The bell F being carried over the cover D, the said cover acts as a sounding-board for the bell and as a support for the bell, and also as a dust-cap for the electromagnet and its appendages.
The advantage of securing the bell on the outside of the cover D, instead of to a post carried by the mechanism and projecting through the cover, is that when it is desired to repair the mechanism the bell will be carried away from the mechanism with the cover and not left in the way to be removed by a subsequent operation. Also, by making the entire cover in one piece a perfect dust-cover is secured, whereas when made in two or more pieces dust is liable to enter the joining faces and settle upon the mechanism.
Having now described my invention, what I claim is 1. The bell F, provided with two clappers, E and H, the clapper E being combined with the armature of an electro-magnet and the clapper H with a puslrbutton, a, the clapper E being operated from a distance and the clapper H by pressing on button. 13, substantially as described.
2. The post G, rigidly secured to casing D, clapper H, pivoted to post G, and rod I in said post, in combination with the electrical clapper E, both the electrical and non-electriand with the bell F and the post G, said post cal clapper being adapted to strike the same being carried by and rigidly secured to the 10 bell, substantially as described. closed end of the casing D, substantially as 3. The base A, electro-magnet B, and the described. 5 armature G, carrying clapper E, the magnet JOSEPH GILLET NOYES.

closed at one end and open at the other end, G. M. THOMAS.
