POLARIZED BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,414, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed August 7, 1390.

Be it known that I, ALBERT STORER, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in P0- larized Bells, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to improve the construction of polarized bells, whereby their strength and efficiency is greatly increased.
In accordance with this invention an electro-magnet comprising two coils wound on suitable cores and attached to a heel-piece is secured to one end of a bent bar-magnet, each core of said electro-magnet having secured to it, preferably in an adjustable manner, a pole-piece.
A re-enforcing block, which constitutes the essential feature of my invention, is secured to the opposite end of the bar-magnet, to which the polarized armature is connected by means of a sprin This re-enforcing block is made of iron and is recessed to receive and inclose one end of the polarized armature.
It is very desirable to attach the armature to the block by means of a spring, and to give suitable length to the spring the re-enforcing block is formed with a boss or extension in or to which the spring is attached.
. The bell-hammer is attached to the polarized armature by a hammer-carrying arm.
Figure 1 shows in plan, and Fig. 2 in side elevation, a polarized bell embodying thisinvention.
The base-plate a, preferably of metal, has secured to it apost at, having two'oppositelyextended arms a to which the gongs are attached, one or two being employed, as desired. A permanent or bar magnet b is also secured to the base a, it being bent and extended upwardlya little higher than the gong to allow the bell-hammer to pass over the post a. V

of this bar-magnet on one pole thereof, said cores having secured to their upper ends by means of screws two pole-pieces 0 made adjustable toward and from each other.
A re-enforcing block (I. is secured to the upper end of the permanent or bar magnet on the opposite pole thereof, said block being made of iron or other suitable equivalent material. This block (I is recessed, as at d, at a point justover the upper end or pole of the bar-magnet. The block (Z has on it a boss or projection (Z slitted down for a short distance. The polarized armature c has attached to it at one end a bell-hammer-carrying arm 6, which extends forward between the two gongs and carries the bell-hammer. The armature e occupies a position between the two pole pieces, and, extending rearwardly, enters the recess (1' in the block (Z, terminating ata point just above the upper end of the bar-magnet. The armature e is attached to a flat spring 6 which enters the slit in the boss or extension of the block, and is there secured by means of a pin 2 or otherwise. This block (1, placed on one pole of the magnet, as shown, becoming saturated with magnetism, presents a very strong field, in which the end of the armature e continually lies, and hence serves as a re-enforcing block for the armature. The block (Z also serves as a very efficient means for holding the armaturefso that in case an accident happens the armature can be replaced without necessitating the renewal of the bar-magnet.
I claim-- 1. In a polarized bell, the combination of the following elements: a base, a bent barmagnet, an electro-magnet having two polepieces and connected to a heel-piece on one pole of the bar-magnet, a recessed and slitted re-enforcing block secured to the other pole of the barmagnet, a polarized armature, spring, bell-hammer, and carrying=arm therefor, and a gong, substantially as described.
2. In a polarized bell, a base, a bent barmagnet, an electro-magnet having two polepieces oppositely arranged, and a heeliece for the electro-magnet secured to one pole of the bent bar-magnet, combined with a re-enforcing block d, secured to the opposite pole of said bar-magnet, which is recessed at d and has a slitted boss (1 the armature 6, one end of which enters the recess (1 in the block d, a spring held in the slit in the boss supporting said armature, a bell-hammer; its carryingarm, and a gong, substantially as described.
