CARL R. ALBERTUS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO AMERICAN ELECTRIC COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ELECTRIC BELL OR RINGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Uct. 22,1912.
Application filed January 17, 1908. Serial No. 411,234.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. ALBnRTUs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electric Bells or Ringers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric bells or ringers, such, for example, as those more commonly used in connection with telephones.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a bell or ringer in which the mechanism for adjusting the gongs relatively to the striker is so located or disposed that it is accessible without entering the usual box or casing by which the electromagnets or other parts of the ringer are usually inclosed.
Another object is to provide a simple and improved mechanism for adjusting the gongs of the ringer.
It is also an object to provide certain details and combinations and features of improvement tending to increase the general efiiciency of an electric bell or ringer of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view on line 1-1 in Fig. 2, showing an electric bell or ringer embodying the principles of my invention, and illustrating the manner in which the adjusting mechanism for the gongs is arranged outside of the box or casing. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail section on line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail section on line 4-4; in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of the mountings for the gongs.
As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a pair of electromagnets A, a pair of permanent magnets B connected with the cores of said electromagnets, and an upper bracket plate C by which the said magnets are connected together. A polarized armatureD is supported on a torsional spring d, which latter is secured to an adjustable yoke (Z suitably held on threaded posts (Z The said armature carries a rod or arm cl, which latter has a hammer or striker 61 at its upper end, the same being disposed between the two gongs E. It will be seen that the bracket plate C is secured to a mounting plate F, which latter is preferably rectangular in form or shape, and secured in any suitable manner to the top or upper surface of the box or casing Gr, as illustrated. The said mounting plate F is provided with upturned ears or lugs f, a pair of said ears or lugs being disposed at each side of the striker (Z In each pair of ears or lugs there is mounted a micrometer adjusting screw the same being suitably held against endwise movement, but being free to rotate within the bearings provided by the said ears or lugs. The two gong mountings H are formed with feet 71 which bear upon and slide along the smooth upper surface of the plate F, and are also provided with downwardly extending portions 71- having threaded openings if. It will be seen that the screws f extend through the said threaded openings 7L2, so that any rotation of said screws is necessarily accompanied by a traveling movement thereon of the said gong mountings 11. Each gong mounting is also provided at its top or summit with an opening its, in which is secured a post h It is to the tops of these posts h that the gongs E are secured by screws if, in the manner shown. The said screws f are provided with slotted heads P, which are adapted to receive a screw driver, whereby the screws are turned for the purpose of adjusting the gongs toward and away from the striker (Z in order to obtain the desired results.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that the mechanism for adjusting the gongs is located entirely outside of the box or casing by which the magnets of the ringer are in-- closed, which box-0r casing may be that of the ordinary Wall telephone. With this an rangement, the prongs can be adjusted without entering the box or casing of the telephone. Furthermore, the micrometer screws are calculated to afford very nice and delicate adjustment for the gongs, thereby insuring the best results.
WVhat I claim as my invention is: mountings, and means for sounding the An electric bell or ringer comprising a gongs. 10 base plate provided with upturned lugs, Signed by me at Chicago, 111., this 27th axially ailined micrometer screws ro-tatably day of Nov. 1907. mounted on said lugs mountings carried on CARL R. ALBERTUS. said screws and provided with feet bearing Witnesses: upon and adapted to slide along the smooth H. P. CLA'UsnN, surface of said plate, gongs carried by said A. R. Roosn.
