ROUGH-ROUNDING AND CHANNELING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY BAYARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rough-Rounding and Channeling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an improvement in rough rounding and channeling machines.
The object of the present invention is to reorganize and improve machines of the above class by providing such machines with a grooving knife which operates at the time the channel is cut to cut a groove in the bottom of the channel for the line of stitches which unites the outsole to the welt of a welted shoe. 7
With this and other objects in view apparent to those skilled in the art, the present invention consists in the devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating. the preferred form of my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rough rounding and channeling machine illustrated and described in Letters Patent of the United States No. 600,883, granted to French and Meyer March 22, 1898, only so much, however, of the machine of said patent being shown as is necessary for an understanding of my invention, reference being had to said patent for a more complete disclosure of said machine; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the vertically movable carrier which supports the channeling and grooving knives and the rotary sole support; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of said carrier looking from the right of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a top plan View of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a front vertical section on line yy, Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line c a;, Fig. 3; Fig. 7 is an enlarged side view of the grooving and channeling knives; and Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective of the clamping plate, grooving knife, clamping block and channeling knife separated but maintaining substantially the relative positions which they occupy when secured together.
As shown in said Patent No. 600,883, a
vertically movable carrier 1 is mounted in the front of the machine, and to the top of the carrier is secured the plate 2 carrying the stud or spindle 3 having the shoulder 4. The lower end of the spindle is supported by means of the latch pivoted thereon and having the arcuate shoulder 6 which engages a correspondingly shaped face in the carrier 1. The latch is locked in its supporting position by means of the screw 7 Rotatably mounted upon the spindle 3 is the rotary sole support 8 which is retained thereon by the latch 5. A portion of the shoulder 4 of the spindle 3 is cut away, as shown in Fig. 5, to receive the clamping block 9, and the shank 10 of the channeling knife is arranged to be clamped by the screw 11 between the clamping face 12 on the plate 2 and the face 13 on the block 9 after the knife has been adjusted to its proper position to cut the desired depth of channel. The channeling knife as shown in Fig. 9 is provided with a cutting blade 14 which is offset from its shank and which, in the illustrated embodiment of the invention, is substantially at right angles thereto, but which may be at whatever angle it is desired to cut the channel. The cutting blade is ofgreater width next the shank than at the outer end, thus forming a recess behind the outer end.
The construction and arrangement .of parts thus far described are substantially the same as shown in Patent No. 600,883 above referred to, and operate in substantially the same manner. They constitute, however, no part of the present invention which will now be described.
The grooving knife as shown in Figs. 7 and 8 comprises a shank 15 and cutting blade 16 which is carried by a widened portion or shoulder 17, the blade and widened portion projecting forwardly beyond the shank and being offset laterally therefrom. The widened portion is shaped to correspond to the channeling blade and is at substantially the same angle to its shank-15 as is the channeling blade to its shank 10, for a purpose recess and close behind the outer end of the blade of the channeling knife. By offsetting the'blade of the grooving knife as described it may be brought into the recess and close behind the cutting edge of the channeling knife, which is a feature of considerable advantage as it reduces to a minimum the dis placement of the groove from the desired position in the channel, where the latter is curved. Another advantage is that the grooving blade may operate in the freshly cut channel without requiring the turning up of the channel flap, since the widened portion 17 which supports the cutting blade is shaped to correspond to the channeling blade, and therefore will lie in the line of the cut and bear upon neither the sole nor the channel flap. By projecting the blade of the grooving knife forwardly beyond its shank, the latter may be secured at a greater or less distance from the channeling knife and independently thereof, which construction conduces to both simplicity and security in mounting the knives as well as to the con venience of the operator in adjusting the same, but in no way afliects the location of the grooving blade close behind the channeling blade. The widened portion between the grooving blade and the shank affords ample strength to support the blade in its offset and projected position.
As shown in the drawings, the clamping plate 19 is provided with arib 21 arranged to enter a groove 22 in the clamping block 9 whereby the plate is held from displacement when the screw 20 is loosened or tight- 'ened. In order to properly locate the groove in the channel means have been provided for positively adjusting the grooving knife laterally with respect to the channeling knife, which means comprise the screw 28 (see Fig. 5) in the clamping block 9 arranged to bear against the shank 15 of the grooving knife near the top thereof to move the grooving knife laterally.
An actuation of the adjusting screw 23 acts to rock or tip the shank of the grooving knife so as to adjust the grooving blade laterally, the forward or blade end of the knife being raised or lowered while the rear end of the shank remains substantially in contact with the block 9.
The operation of the machine is the same as that of the machine described in Patent No. 600,883 abovereferred to, save that as the shoe passes over the rotary sole support a groove is cut in the bottom of the channel at the same time that the latter is cut.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1 A channeling machine, having, in comesvgsoa bination, a channelin knife, having a shank and a channeling bdade, and a grooving knife having a grooving blade located behind the channeling blade and supported upon a portion of the grooving knife shaped to correspond to the blade of the channeling knife, substantially as described.
2. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a channeling knife having a channeling blade provided with a recess, a grooving knife having a shank and a grooving blade, said blade being offset from its shank and located in the recess,substantially as described.
3. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a channeling knife having a channeling blade provided with a recess, a grooving knife having a shank and a grooving blade, said blade projecting beyond its shank and being located in the recess, substantially as described.
4. A channeling machine, having, in combination, a channeling knife and a grooving knife, acarrier having a clamping face, a clamping block provided with two clamping faces, means for securing the block to the carrier to clamp the channeling knife between the clamping face on the carrier and one of the clamping faces on the block, and a clamping plate and means for securing the plate to the block to clamp the grooving knife between the clamping face on the plate and the other of the clamping faces on the block, substantially as described.
5. A grooving knife for channeling 1nachines having a shank, a grooving blade offset from the same, and a widened portion between the grooving blade and the shank, substantially as described.
(3. A channeling machine having, in combination, a channeling knife and a grooving knife each provided with a horizontal shank, the channeling knife having a depending blade and the grooving knife having a depending oifset portion located directly behind the blade of the channeling knife and .a grooving blade at the bottom of the offset portion, substantially as described.
7. A channeling machine having, in combination, a channeling knife and a grooving knife, the grooving knife having a shank and a blade, and means for rocking the shank of the grooving knife to adjust the blade relatively to the channeling knife, substantially as described.
