UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORRIS L. ORUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUTT'ERMHEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,315, dated December 19, 1882.
Y Application filed September 9, 1882. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MORRIS L. ORUM, of the 'city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Cutters, of which improvements the followingisa specitication.
The object of my invention is to provide a cutter adapted to form a recess which, commencing at its bottom, is dovetailed or undercut for the major portion of its depth, and for the remainder is cut out to a width greater than that of the top of the dovetail.
To this end my improvements consist in the combination of a cutter-head, a recessing-cutter secured thereto, and a spur-cutter; also, in the combination of a cutter-head, a dovetail recessing-cutter, a plain recessing-cutter, and a spur-cutter.
The improvements claimed are hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan or top view of a rotary cutter embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a side view in elevation ot the same, and Fig. 3 a transverse section at the line x of Fig. l.
To carry out my invention I provide a cy lindrical cutter-head or carrier, A, which is formed upon or secured to a central stock or spindle, a, suited for connection to a shaft rotated by a proper prime mover. A dovetail recessing-cutter, B, (one or more,) having its edge inclined at an angle corresponding tothe desired inclination of the dovetailed or undercut portion of the recess to be formed, is secured to the cutter-head A by a clamp, b, and stud b', adjustability of the cutterB outwardly to compensate for wear being provided for by fitting a ange'or inclined rib, b2, on its lower side, in a groove in the cutter-head, Which is eccentric to the axis of the cutter-head and spindle. A downwardly-inclined rib, b3, which is curved concentrically with the lower llange Y of the cutter B and the groove in which the latter rests, is formed on the end of the clamp b and lits in a corresponding groove on the cutter above the ilange b2. rlhe double inclined bearing ofthe cutter-head and clamp ,on the cutter, which is thus provided, enables the cutter to be held firmly in its adjusted position Without the risk of displacement outwardly when in operation. A plain recessingcutter, C, (one or more,) is secured to the cutter-head by a clamp, c, and stud c', andl is adapted to be adjusted outwardly in a similar manner tothe dovetail-cutter B--that is to say, by having a lower rib or llange fitting in an eccentric slot in the cutter-head. The clamp c may, if desired, have a downwardly-inclined rib fitting a similar groove in the cutter, so as to hold the cutterOin a similar manner to the dovetail-cutter B.
In order to obviate the splitting of the Wood in which the recess is to be made by the dovetail-outter when Working against the grain, I secure to the cuttershead, in advance oi' the leading edge of each dovetail-cutter, a spurcutter D that -is to say, a cutter whose edge is perpendicular to the axis of the cutter-head, and which effects a scoring cnt at or about the centerot' the inclined cut made by the dovetail-cutter B. The spur-cutters are by preference fitted in slots in the clamps c ot' the cutters O, and are retained therein by studs d, which permit of their adjustment as from time to time required to compensate Wear.
1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Iatentl. The combination, substantiallyassettorth, of a cutter-head, a recessing-cutter, and a scoring spur-cutter secured to the cutter-head in advance of the leading edge of the recessingcutter, and between the extremities thereof, so as to divide the shaving which is removed lby said cutter.
2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of a cutter-head, a dovetail-cutter, a plain recessing-cutter whose edge is perpendicular to the axis ot' the cutter-head, and which effects a scoring cut between the extremities of the inclined cut made by the dovetail-cutter and a spur-cutter.
