Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom itmay concern.
Be it known that I, VVILrRm GI-IAPUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Operating upon Soles, of which the following description, in connection With the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for operating upon soles.
In the manufacture of boots and shoes of certain classes it is customary to cut a channel along the edge of thebottom of the sole and form a groove within this channel for the. purpose of receiving the stitches which secure the sole to the shoe. It is also customary in making certain kinds of boots and the sole in proximity to its edge.
Heretofore with the use of prior machines for channeling and grooving soles it has been customary to form the above grooves in the sole by separate operations so that considerable time was employed in grooving the soles.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved machine of the above type whichshallbe free from this objection.
With this object in view the present invention contemplates the provision ina machine for operating upon soles of a knife for cutting a channel along the edge of the sole, a groover for grooving the sole within the channel cut by the knife, a second groover arranged to cut a groove along the edge of the sole outside of the channel and for adjustment independently of the first groover and means for holding and feeding a sole against said channel knife and groovers. With this arrangement the sole may be channeled and at the same time a groove formed within the channel and one formed along the edge of the sole outside of the channel. In the embodiment of the invention hereinafter described the two groovers are supported for independent adjustment whereby the distance between the grooves formed in the sole may be varied to suit diiferent requirements and the depth to Which each groove extends into the work may be varied independently of the depth of the other groove.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a channeling machine embodying the present invention showing a sole in operative position in the machine; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the machine shown in Fig. l with parts broken away to show the construction; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a sole showing the manner in which the grooves are positioned along the edge of the sole; and Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a portion of the machine shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 2 indicates a channeling knife of ordinary form which may be clamped by suitable means upon a knife carrier supported upon the frame of the machine. The groover 4 for cutting the groove within the channel formed by the channeling knife consists of a slotted shank portion 6 and a tubular cutting portion 8 having its cutting edge arranged back of the blade of the channeling knife. The groover 10 for cutting the groove along the edge of the sole outside of the channel is similar in construction to the groover 4 but is arranged with its cutting edge back of and offset inwardly from the blade of the channeling knife. The groovers 4 and 10 are clamped in position upon the machine by means of a single clamplng screw 12 which extends respectively through the slots in the shanks of the groovers, Fig. 4. In the present machine the roovers are clamped upon a groover knlfe block 13 which may be arranged for vertical movements so that the groovers may be raised to permit the insertion of a sole in the machine. A rotary feed wheel 14 whch may be of any suit-able construction is employed to press the sole into operative relation to the channel knife and groover and to feed the sole against these tools.
To press the work into operative engagement with the feed wheel there is provided a presser foot 16 which has an acting portion 18 arranged in front of the channel knife and in line with said knife and the groover 4. The presser foot is also provided with a portion 20, ofiset inwardly from the blade of the channel knife, which extends into close proximity to the cutting portion may be arranged to engage the solo at a point much closer to the groover 10 than would otherwise be the case. This is of advantage as it insures that the outer portion of the sole adjacent the gro-over 10 will be properly pressed into engagement wit-h the feed wheel so that said groover will out a groove of uniform depth along the edge of the sole. The presser foot may be secured in position in any suitable way as by being secured to the lower end of a vertically adjustable rod 21. It will be seen in the construction described that upon loosening the clamping screw 12 the'cutting edges of the two groovers may be adjusted independently of each other, both vertically to vary the depth of cut and horizontally to vary the distance between the grooves or the positions of the grooves transversely of the edge of the sole.
Having described my invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A machine for operating upon soles, having in combination, a channeling knife, a grooving knife for cutting a groove within the channel formed by the channeling knife, a second grooving knife for cutting a groove along the edge of the sole outside the said channel, means for engaging the sole adjacent to the cutting edge of said second grooving knife and means for feeding a sole against said knives.

A machine for operating upon soles, having in combination,'a channeling knife, a grooving knife for cutting a groove in the channel formed by the channeling knife, a second grooving knife offset from the blade of the channeling knife whereby it may cut a groove along the edge of the sole outside of the channel, a feed wheel for pressing a sole into engagement with said knives, and a presser foot arranged in advance of the channeling knife to press the sole toward the feed wheel, said presser foot having an extension arranged at one side of the cutting edge of the knife for engagement with the edge of the sole in close proximity to said second grooving knife. 3. A machine for operating upon soles having in combination a channeling knife,
