Description
Oct. 27, 1931. F. 1-. WENTWORTH BUTTONHOLE MAKING MACHINE Filed March 1, 1928 w nf ixw A Patented Oct. 27, 1 931 UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE FRANK 'r. wENrwoRrmoF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 'ro UNITED snor MACHINERY CORPORATION, OF PATERSON,
JERSEY NEW JERSEY, A comnATIoN on NEW BUTTON HOLE MAKING MACHINE Application filed March 1, 1928.
The invention relates to, buttonhole making machines and more particularly to the mechanism for cutting. the buttonhole slit in the work. I
The primary object of the invention is to simplify and improve. the construction of the mechanism for cutting the buttonhole slit 'eral description.
VVit-h these objects in view, one feature of the invention consists in the. provision of a simplified and improved cutter mechanism which is particularly adapted for use in a buttonhole making machine and comprises a cutter having the shape of a flattened tube and clamping members or plates arranged on either side of the cutter adapted to fit in the socket clamp of the cutter lever or carrier of the machine. and hold the cutter securely in position through the pressure exerted on the clamping members by the socket clamp.
The several features of the invention consist also in the devices, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed and together with the advantages to be obtained thereby should be readily understood by one skilled in the art from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of the invention in. a buttonhole sewing machine similar to that disclosed in the patent to G. S. Hill, No. 1,063,880, patented June 3, 1913.
In the drawings, Fig.1 is a right side elevation partly in section, only so much of the machine being illustrated as is necessary to show the connection of the present invention therewith; Fig' 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cutter blade and the clamping members for holding it in the socket clamp. p
The machine illustrated comprises gen- Serial No. 258,222.
erally a work clamp 4 for holding the mate- I rial to be operated upon, a cutter 6 for cutting a buttonholein the material, and stitch forming mechanism comprising f a straight-eyepointed upper needle 8, a curved-eye-pointed under needle 10, and a cooperating looper 12. I
For a detailed description of the operation of these parts in formingabuttonhole and of the actuating mechanism therefor, reference may be had to the patent to Hill above referred to. V
The die cutter whichforms'more specifically the subject matter of the present invention comprises the cutter blade 6 and two clamping members 14 and 16'Which are arranged one on each side of the cutter blade and have their outer faces. shaped to fit into a socket clamp 18. This clamp is formed on the end of the clamping lever 20 and forms a part of the ordinary construction of the buttonhole sewing machine described in the patent to Hill above referred to. The die cutter is clamped securely in position by means of the clamping screw 22 which is provided for tightening the jaws of the socket clamp 18.
The cutter blade 6 employed in the preferred form of the invention has the shape of a flattened tubesharpened at oneendto form a cutting edge of the desired pattern. A blade formed in this manner has the advantage that it is simple in construction, is inexpensive to manufacture, and may readily be replaced when worn out. In'order to insure that the blade is held securely in position,\the clampingmembers 14 and 16 are provided with corresponding recesses indicated at 24 and 26 so thatthe blade is securely-held against sidewise or endwise displacement during the cutting operation. To further insure that the parts arev locked rigidly in position, and also to assist in the assembly interior of the cutter and is then carried away through a channel 30 formed in the cutter lever 20. lVith the hollow cutter herein th sclosed, the waste material is carried off 111 this manner, the parts of the die cutter being so designed for this purpose that the upper end of the cutter blade 6 registers with the channel 30 and the clamping members 14 and 16 are designed to permit a free passage of the waste material from the cutter tube into the channel while at" the same time affording a sufiicicnt support to the up er end of the cutter against endwise strain uring the buttonhole making operation.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated andone: embodiment thereof specifically described, What is claimed 1. In a buttonholer making machine the combination with a cutter lever of a cutter having the shapeot a flattened tube, a socket clamp formed inthe cutter lever, and clamping members arranged on opposite sides of the cutter adapted to he held in the socket clamp to clamp: the cutter rigidly in position.
2. In a buttonhole making machine: the combination with acutter lever of a cutter having the shape: of a flattened tube: to pet mit' the ejection of waste material. through the interior of; the tube, a: socket. clamp formed in the: cutter lever, clamping membersarranged on. opposite" sides: of the cutter and adapted tobe held in the socket; clamp to clamp the cutter rigidly in position and a channel inthe cutter'lerver connecting with the cutter to carrv away the waste material.
3; In a buttorihole' making machine: the
combination with a:- cutter block and cutter lever of a cutter having the shape of a. flat: tenedtube to permitthe carrying oil of waste material, a socket clamp formed in the cutter lever, clamping; members arranged on each side of the cutter recessed to hold the cutter securely in, position: and adaptedito beheld in the socket clamp to clamp the cutter in po. sition, and a channel termed in the cutter lever adapted: to register with the upperend of the cutter tuber I 4. A diecomprising. a; cutter having" the. shape of a. flattened tube: to; permit the carrying away of waste material and two clampingmembers arranged on either side of the cutter adapted to engage in thesocket of a die holder to clamp the cutter rigidly in po sition with the end of the cutter tube in regis t'erwith corresponding channel in the die holden,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this: specification.
