Description

. M. G. WELLS.

LANTERN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed January 12, 1909. Serial No. 471,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MANZO C. WELLS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at N ederland, in the county of Boulder and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lanterns such as are used by miners and other artisans who Work at night, to li ht their way to and from the place at which they are employed and the object of the invention is to provide, in association with a lantern of simple construction, a means for attaching it to a dinner-pail or other receptacle irrespective of the latters size or shape.
Further objects reside in the provision of a lantern constructed to hold and inclose an ordinary candle and having means whereby thelatter may be lighted without danger of the match employed thereto, being extinguished by the action of air-currents.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings in the various views of which like parts are similarly designated and in which Figure 1, represents a side elevation of a dinner-pail and my improved lantern in operative position. Fig. 2, a horizontal section taken along the line 22 Fig. 1 and Fig. 3 an end-view looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, let the numeral 5 designate a receptacle of the conventional design of a dinner-pail and 6 the lantern which is attached thereto by means of a flexible band 7 The lantern 6 comprises a cylindrical casing which is formed in its front with vertical ways for the reception of a pane 8 of glass or other transparent material. A partition 9 placed transversely in the casing, at a distance above its lower edge, has a central opening 9 through which, in practice, the candle 10 projects and this partition carries upon its lower surface, a circular spring 12 which surrounds the opening 9 for the purpose of firmly maintaining the candle 10 in its adjusted position. The band 7, by means of which the lantern is secured to the receptacle, may be composed of leather, metal or any other flexible material and it is provided with suitable means, such as an adjustable clasp 13, for fastening its extremities together. The lantern 6 is detachably and laterally adjustably connected with the strap by means of a double loop 14 the integral members 14* and 14 of which extend at right angles to each other to, respectively, receive the strap 7 and a vertical hook 18 Whose extremity is secured at the rear side of the lantern-casing.
For the purpose of facilitating the lighting of the candle 10, in windy weather, I provide the casing with one or more apertures 15 and secure on its inside, in operative proximity to the said aperture or apertures, a strip 16 of roughened or abrasive material, upon which a match, inserted through one of the openings, may be struck to produce the flame required for igniting the candle. A bail 17, the ends of which are connected with the lantern casing, near its upper end, may be employed to carry the same when detached from the receptacle 5.
The clasp 13, above referred to may be of any suitable design and a buckle or similar fastening device may be substituted therefor. The contrivance shown in the drawings consists of a plate 13 secured at one end of the strap 7 and a therewith movably connected clamp 13, which secures the opposite end of the strap when placed between it and the plate 13*.
I wish it understood that, while I have shown and described my invention in the best form now known to me, variations in the form and arrangement of the parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A lantern comprising a casing, a partition secured above its lower end and having a central opening, a means adapted to hold a candle inserted through the said opening, in its adjusted position, and a means connected with the said casing whereby it may be secured to a dinner-pail or the like.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MANZO C. WELLS.
