UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK KNOWLTON FERNALD, OF ELKHART, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE DR. MILES MEDICAL COMPANY, OF ELKHART, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
SHEET-SUPPORTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KNowL'roN FERNALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Supporting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful means for supporting a plurality of sheets of paper which have been doubled upon themselves. These sheets are particularly adapted to have a calendar printed thereon, the calendar for a single month being printed upon each side of a single page, so that three doubled pages, or six half pages of paper, are sufficient for the complete calendar, as the pages can be turned successively from front to rear and the successive months caused to appear in rotation for the first half of the calendar and then by merely turning the same around, the calendar for the second half of the year can be exhibited in the same way.
With these and other objects in View my invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, the preferred form of which will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings and then the invention particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings wherein the same part is designated by the same reference numeral wherever it occurs, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2, 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on a similar line when two of the leaves of the calendar have been turned; Fig. 4 is a section showing how the leaves are supported when the supporting device is improperly placed in position between the leaves, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the support.
6 designates a plurality of leaves each of which is folded on the line 7, the leaves being secured together on these folded lines by means of the staples 8, wire-stitches, or the like.
9 designates a long narrow slot cut on the fold line through all the sheets and locatedbetween the staples 8, said slots however not extending to the staples.
As best shown in Fig. 5, the support consists of a body portion 10, preferably pro vided with an opening in its upper portion, in order that the same may be conveniently suspended from a wall or the like, and at the lower portion with the laterally extending shoulders 11. These shoulders are formed of such a length that they are longer than the distance between the staples 8. The width of the body portion of the support preferably, and as shown, is substantially equal to the length of the slot 9.
In operation when the device is used as a calendar the three double sheets which would then be required, after having been suitably printed, are stitched together and the slot 9 cut therein. They are now folded over on the central line 7 and the body por tion 10 of the support passed through the,
slot so as to cause the shoulders 11 to support the calendar. When the body portion of the support extends through a double sheet the fold line will rest upon the shoulders. Should, however, the support be passed through between doubled sheets as shown in Fig. 4 then the sheets will be supported by the staples 8 resting upon the shoulders, and if these parts were not stapled together and the shoulders made of the proper length the sheets would not be suspended when the support was in this position.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a device of the class described the com bination with a plurality of sheets centrally folded and inserted one within the other, said sheets being stapled on their central fold line and provided between the staples with an opening also located on the central fold line, of a support comprising a body portion adapted to extend through the openings in the sheets, and shoulders at the lower edge of the body portion extending out therefrom and upon which the sheets are supported, said shoulders being of such a length as to extend under the staples securing the sheets together for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
Witnesses C. S. BAniIAUs, V. J. VURPILLAT.
