Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed December 12, 1908.. Serial No. 467,246.
State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Journal- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
.My invention relates to an improvement in a journal-box.
The object of the invention is to provide fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a journal-box with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section on .line on, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view to that of Fig. 3 illustrating the door in its open position. Fig. 5 is a section on line to, in, Fig. 2.
1 represents the journal-box having the lubricating bearing-tray 2 and 3 is the axle, these parts being illustrated to show their association with the door construction. The outer end of the box has an opening. part of which is formed by the horizontal ends 4; and.
part of which is formed by the flange 5, so that the margin of the opening is defined by an endwise extending flange over which the door fits.
6 represents the door provided with a marginal groove 7, intowhich the box edges 4, 5, extend thusforming an efiectual seal. 8 represents a door hinge at one side ofthe box and 9 a spring holding the door normally in position. 1 10 represents a conventional latch. Upon the inside of the door. is 2:. lug 11 to which is pivoted the plate 12.
13, 14, represent lugs upon either side of lug 11 and forming'a rest for the plate 12 in either position.
15 represents a lug on one of the hinge members adapted to abut against the sides of the box, as indicated in Fig. 4:, holding the door in position perpendicularto the front of the box. 3
Whenthe door is opened the plate 12 is thrown over upon the rest 13 in which position it engages the side edge of the box, as shownin Fig. 4, holding the door in this perpendicular position, so that the box may be conveniently packed and unpacked.
, Having described my invention, I claim In ajournal-box for axles, a box formed with a doorv opening having a marginal edge, a hinged door formed with a marginal recess fitting the edge projection of the box, a spring tending to hold the door shut, a lug on one of the hinge members adapted to limit the outward swing of the door, and a pivoted plate upon the inside of the door, adapted to be swung into engagement with an adjacent portion of the box to hold the door in its extreme open position, and a rest for the plate upon each side of the pivot, substantially as described.
In'testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES G. SMITH. Witnesses:
