1 COVER FOR OIL WASTE CANS.

, tance so that this front edge acts as a stop to empty the can without the catching of UNITED STATES PATENT PAHR ANDERSON, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 1'0 DOVER, STAMPING AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PORTLAND, MAINE, A CORPORATION Q2 MAINE.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, PAHR ANDERSON, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have'inventeda new and useful Improvement in Covers for Oil- Waste 1 sans, of which the following is a specifica- 1on.-
My improvement relates to a cover for oil waste cans or other like urposes and the purpose of myinvention 1s to provide such a cover as W111 normally remain closed and at the same time can be easily raised the waste upon any projectin arts.
My invention will be unded's tbod by reference to the drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan of a cover adapted for this purpose, Fig. 2 being a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail of the hinge andconnection between the sections, indlcating also the stop which maintains the parts normally in horlzontal condition when packed for shipment.
I have-shown my cover attached to a can A. The cover itself is made in two ieces, one piece .B having a flange b capable of permanent attachment to the can within which it normally lies by riveting or otherwise as shown in Fig. 2. The other piece C of the cover is hinged to the part B by hinges c, this part comprising a cover portion preferably having a flange c which shall overlapthe top of the can when the cover is closed and also having a ring 0 or other handle by means of which it may be lifted. These two parts of the cover are not only hinged together, but are maintained in such a osition ,9 to keep the can normally closed by means of the spring D. This sprin -is a tightly wound s iral spring each end 0 which is preferably nt as indicated at d and d? so that its ends have a considerable bearin surface upon the two sections B and C o the top orcover and'maintain the cover in a normally closed fposition. The front edge (Z of the part B o the cover extends forward of the hinges some little dis- Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 2, 1907. Serial liTo.

to hold the section 0 of the cover in a substantially parallel plane with the planeof the part B. Thus 1t acts as a stop with relation to the s ring D to prevent it from expending itseii in collapsing the cover, and serves to make it possible to construct 5.5
"these coversand ship them in bulk in sub stantially the condition in which they are. to be placed upon or attached to the cans. It is of course evident that as these hinges as such are no part of the invention, any form of hinge suitable for the'purpose (andthere are many) may be used. ,As shown in the drawings, however, the hinge consists of a metal strap 0 folded around the wire 0 which is attached to the part C, the ends of the strapc 0 being assed throu h a slot 0* in the part B and astened to t is under side of the part B.
A feature of this device lies in the fact that this spring is upon "the outside of the cover rather than'the' inside so that when the can is being emptied it will not catch the waste or in any other way. serve to collect any of the oily matter or dirt which the can may contain. The result is that the can can easily be kept clean and without any tendency to collect dirt or rubbish of any kind, the inside of the cover being substantially smooth and having no projecting edges by which such matter may be 001- lected, and the can itself being at all times practically tight and capable of confining the material therein.
. It is evident that while this cover is useful for a can for oily waste such as is 001- lected in mills, it-is also'available for garbe e and other lilite collecting purposes.
'atl claim as my invention is 1. A can coder comprising two sections hinged together and having a spring located upon the outer side thereof whereby when in use the two sections will be kept normally in substantially the same plane, one of said sections overlappin the other and'normally restin thereon, and the two sections being norma y maintained in substantially continuous planes between the pressure of the spring on the one side and the contact of to limit said movement beyond a eertainl the adjacent portions of the sections on the I point, whereby the said sections are mai1i= other, as described.
2. Acan cover made in two sections hinged plane, as set forth.
