SET FOR FORMING PLOW-SCRAPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 112, 19%9.
App1ication filed April 29, 1909. Serial No. 493,023.
'lo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr F. Pnrrorrn'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brundidge, in the county of Pike and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Set for Forming Plow-Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to sets for forming plow scrapers and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a set upon which a blank may be easily and quickly formed up into a plow scraper at minimum cost of fuel and labor.
The set is adapted to be used after the blank has been outlined in its general configuration and when it is so shaped it is heated and while it is heated it is placed upon the set and is bent and formed into its final configuration as will hereinafter appear.
The set consists primarily of a foundation upon which is mounted a middle block having an inclined work supporting surface. Side blocks are also mounted upon the foundation and are spaced from the middle block and located one at each side of the same. The said side blocks also have inclined work supporting surfaces and pins are mounted upon the foundation adjacent the work supporting surfaces of the said side blocks. A bending lever is fulcrumed upon the foundation adjacent the work supporting surface of the middle block and said lever is provided with a loop shaped head the opening through which is of greater dimensions than the transverse dimensions of the said middle block. When the heated blank is placed against the middle block the said lever is swung so that its loop shaped head comes in contact with the end portions of the said blank and the said end portions are bent back against the side blocks. By maintaining a grasp upon the said lever the blank is held in position upon the blocks while the artisan using a hammer or other instruments may beat the scraper into the desired shape. By reason of the fact that the blocks are spaced apart the end portion of the scraper may be formed curved or straight as desired.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a top plan view of the set. 2 is an edge elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of a portion of the same cut on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The set consists of the foundation 1 upon which is mounted the middle block 2. Said block is provided with an inclined work supporting surface 8. The side blocks a are also mounted upon the foundation 1 and are spaced from the middle block 3. Each side block 4 is provided with an inclined work supporting surface 5. The pins 6 are mounted upon the foundation 1 adjacent the inclined work supporting surfaces 5 of the block a. The eyes 7 are mounted upon the foundation 1 and the loop shaped head of the lever 9 is fulcrumed in the said eyes 7. The eyes 7 are located adjacent the inclined work supporting surface 3 of the block 2 and the opening through the head 8 is of greater dimensions than the transverse dimensions of the said block 2.
The blank of the scraper is placed against the inclined surface 3 of the block 2 and then the lever 9 is swung toward the said block 2 so that the side portions of the loop shaped head 8 engage the end portions of the blank and bend the same back against the block 4. as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. After the end portions of the blank have been bent back into the position as above indicated the operator still holds the loop portion 8 in engagement with the said end portions of the blank and at the same time strikes the intermediate portion of the blank with a hammer and thus forms the same up into its final shape. At the same time if it is desired to curve the end portion of the scraper this can be done by striking the said end portion with a hammer while they are still heated. By reason of the fact that the opening through the loop port-ion 8 of the lever 9 is of greater dimension than the transverse dimensions of the block 3 the entire surface of the blank of the scraper resting upon the work supporting surface 3 is exposed so that the said sur face of the blank may be worked by the force of the blows of the hammer into an exact plane or substantially so. At the same time the side portions of the looped head 8 may be used for bowing the upper edge por tions only of the end portions of the blank of the scraper. After the scraper has been properly shaped the lever 9 is swung away from the block 2 when the scraper may be readily removed from the said blocks and. the foundation 1. Thus it will be seen that in order to properly shape the scraper it is necessary to heat it once only and when so heated it may be positioned upon the blocks and quickly worked into its final configuration. This can also be done at little expenditure of labor thus the device serves as a saver of labor as well as fuel.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters-Patent is 1. A set for forming plow scrapers com prising a foundation, a middle block located v thereon, side blocks located thereon and being spaced from the middle block and a bending lever fulcrumed to the foundation adjacent the middle block.
2. A set for forming plow scrapers comprising a foundation, a middle block located thereon, side blocks located thereon and being spaced fromthe middle block, a bending lever fulcrumed 'to the foundation adjacent the middle bloclgand pins located upon the foundation adjacent the side blocks.
3. A set for forming plow scrapers com prising a foundation, a middle block located thereon, side blocks located thereon and spaced from the middle block, and a bending lever having a loop-shaped head fulcruinedto the foundation, said head having its side portion in vertical planes lying between the middle block and the side blocks.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
