Description
G. BATGHELOR. PACKING CASE SEALING DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED DEG. 31,1908.
Patented 0@1- .12,1909.
Attorney CHRISTOPHER G. BATGI-IELOR, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
PACKING-CASE-SEALING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1909.
Application filed. December 31, 1908. Serial No. 470,267.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER C. BATOHELOR, a citizen of the United States, residing in Baltimore, in the State of Mary land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Case-Sealing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for sealing packing cases so that they cannot be opened without the fact being apparent, and has for its object the provision in combination with the metal binders or straps usually secured. around the case to strengthen it, of loops formed of sheet metal and secured to the case, the binders or straps being passed through said loops so as to cover the securing means for the loops and have their ends secured together by rivets, seals or other preferred devices.
The construction and operation of my im' proved sealing device will be described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a packing case with my improved sealing device shown thereon, Fig. 2, a cross section of the case, Fig. 3, a view showing the blank from which the loop is formed, and Fig. 4, a view of the loop formed from the blank.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
A indicates the packing case to which my improved sealing device is applied and consists of loops 1 secured to the packing case through which the binder or strap 2 is passed and has its ends riveted and sealed together as shown at- 3 so that the binder or strap cannot be unfastened and withdrawn without the fact being made apparent.
The loops 1 are formed of the blanks illustrated in Fig. 3 in which 1 indicates the two ends of the blank that are wider than the middle portion 1 so that when folded as shown in Fig. 1 the two end pieces 1 form the base and have a nail or screw at driven through the projecting tongue 1 formed by the part of the base l left uncovered by the narrow middle portion 1 which forms the top of the loop 1. IVhen the binder or strap 2 is passed through the loops 1 it covers the head of the fastening 4 secured through tongues 1 of base 1, and when the ends of the binder or straps are sealed together as stated the fastenings cannot be removed without breaking the binder or strap or the seal. As shown in the drawings at least one of the loops 1 is secured to each of the boards comprising the top, bottom and sides of the case so that the boards cannot be loosened and removed while the straps are in place and the loops intact.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. I11 a packing case sealing device, loops having extended tongues and secured to the case through said tongues, and a binder passed through the loops and covering the securing means.
2. In a packing case sealing device, loops having extended tongues and secured to the case by means of driven fastenings through said tongues, and straps passed through the loops and covering the heads of said driven fastenings, the ends of said straps being secured together.
3. In a packing case sealing device, loops formed of pieces of material having wide ends and a narrow connecting portion, said pieces being each folded so that the end portions overlap and form the base and the narrow connecting portion forms the top of the loop, the loops secured to the case through the part of the base not covered by the connecting portions, and a binder passed through the loops and covering the securing means for the loops.
4:. In a packing case sealing device, loops formed of pieces of material having wide ends and a narrow connecting portion, said pieces being each folded so that the end portions overlap and form the base and the narrow connecting portion forms the top of the loop, driven fast-enings secured to the case through the part of the base not covered by the connecting portion, and a strap passed through the loops and covering the ends of the driven fastenings, the ends of the strap being secured together.
In testimony whereof I hereto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER C. BATCHELOR.
