UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NEWELL B. PARSONS, OF CHICAGO,- ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 BELD EN MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Continuation of application Serial No. 322,866, filed June 22, 1906. This application filed January 6, 1908. Serial No. 409,385.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWELL B. PARSONS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to attachments for telephones, for holding a writing pad suitably for the convenience of the telephone user.
In my present invention I have providedmeans for holding a writing pad and adapted to be attached to wall telephone sets not having the usual writing shelf.
Three figures of drawings accompany this description, in which Figure 1 shows a front view of my attachment, Fig. 2 shows a side view and Fig. 3 shows a side view of my attachment as applied to a telephone equipment of the class indicated above.
The first or pad-h0lding element consists of a bracket 1, a paper shelf 2, screw-threaded rivet-posts 3 3 holding the bracket and shelf together, and means for holding a pad of paper u n the shelf. In the figures, the means emp oyed consists of extension mem bers of the rivet-posts 3 3 screw-threaded to receive the nuts 4 4 adapted to clamp the bar 5 and the pad 6, both of which are slipped upon the extension posts before the nuts 4 4 are applied. The bracket 1 is adapted to engage the front of the telephone box, and an extension arm 1 integral with the bracket 1 extends backward beyond the edge of the main portion of the bracket 1 an turns upwardly in hook form to engage the back surface of the door of the telephone box by passing around the lower projecting edge of the door.
he second or clamping element consists of a rod 7 whose upper end is formed into hook shape as at 8 to engage the upper projecting edge of the door of the telephone box and whose lower end is threaded to receive a win -nut 9 after passing loosely through the racket 1, whereby the hook 8 and the bracket 1 may be drawn together to clllamp the door of the telephone box between t em.- It will be noted that, as the wing-nut 9 is tightened upon the rod 7 after being applied to the telephone door as shown in Fig. 3, the extension arm 1 first will engage the lower edge of the door, and the pad-holding element as a whole, being a rigid unit with the bracket 1, then will swing upon the contact of arm 1 and the edge of the door until the hook end of extension 1 engages the back surface of the door and until the upper or main portion of the bracket 1 engages the front surface of the door, .when further movement will be impossible and further turning of the wing-nut 9 will make the paper shelf firm in itsposition by placing a stress upon the structural parts of the attachment. The pad thus will be held rigidly in position, without possible motion in any direction whatever, and inclined at an angle depending partly upon the conformation of the bracket 1 and partly upon the thickness of the door of the telephone box.
It is found that, when only a limited amount of motion is permitted between the two elements as above described, this attachment is well adapted to mount upon.
telephone boxes having projecting edges, the complete attachment gripping the upper and 'lower surfaces of the box and bearing also upon the front surface in a manner that provides a rigid and reliable mounting for the pad of pa er.
I do not wish to limit myself in all respects to the exact details herein shown and described, and I understand that many modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In an attachment for a telephone box door, a pad-sustaining bracket comprising an inclined plate having at its upper part an edge engaging the front surface of the telephone door and having at its lower part an extension extending back below and beyond the lower edge of the door and turnmg upward in hook form and engaging the back surface of the door; and a bolt engaging the upper edge of the door and drawing the two described edges of the bracket against the two described surfaces of the door, substantially as described.
2. In an attachment for a telephone door,
- a vertical clamping rod hookin over the of the bracket by engagement with the door 10 top edge of the door; a pad-brac et having is permitted, substantially as described. two door-engaging Wing-like arms, one en- Signed by me at Chicago, county of Cook gaging the front surface of the door and and State of Illinois, in the presence of two the other engaging the back surface of the Witnesses.
