BLASTING-CARTBIDGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1909. Serial No. 498,624.
To all whom it may concerns I Be it known that I, THOMAS TUR'roN, a citizen of the United Qtates, residing at Kilgore,
in the county of Fremont and State of Idaho,
have invented a new, and useful Improvement in Blasting-Cartridges, of which the following is a specification.
' quality when used as intended.
not all reabsorbed 'nam'ite, or wrapper. of bibulous material, such as which will absorb and retain My object'is to. provide a cartridge of dynamite, or other explosive of which nitroglycerin is a component, of an improved construction which renders it practically free from danger of premature explosion, without in any way detracting from its explosive Itis usual to form a blasting cartridge by providing a stick of dynamite with a wrapper of parafiin, or other water-proof, paper to facilitate handling and exclude moisture;
' and while all the nitroglycerin remains incor'porated with the sawdust, or flotherabsorbentwith which it is mixed to diminish its sensitiveness to shock, there is no danger attendant upon handling the cartridge if ordinary care is employed. Itis only when, from anycause, nitroglycerin exudes from the mixture and collects upon the outer surface of the stick, or between the waterproof covering and the explosive, that danger of premature explosion becomes imminent.
Lack of recognition of this fact has been theblotting-paper, any free nitroglycerin exuded from the mixture, the danger from premature explosion is practically eliminated. The bibulous mate-- rial in holding the nitroglycerin has the same eiiect as the sawdust, or the like, of diminishing the sensitiveness of the nitroglycerin "to shock.
-Th in tire accompanyingdrawing, Figure 1 illustrates mYLIEPLQVEd. cartridge 111 perting-paper spective; and Fig. the same.
2 is a sectional view-0f The stick of dynamite 3 is enveloped in closely-fitting layer absorbent material,
or-wrapper such as blotting-paper,
which, inturn, is, incased in a wrapperb of parafiin paper, or
excluding material.
4 of blotting-paper, should contact closely with the explosive wrapper,
mixture so as to other suitable moisture- The inner layer, or or the like,
absorb nitroglycerin as fast as it exudes from the stick or mixture,
thereby preventingthe collection of any free nitroglyce in between it and the mixture.
In blasting,- less impregnated may be charged the absorbent wrapper, more or with the nltroglycerin,
thereby .avoidingwaste.
' What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I 1. A cartridge f erin-containing explosive havin ing bibulous wrapper adapte A freed b freezing and thawing.
nitroglycerin orrned with a nitroglyca contact- 1 2. A cartridge formed with a nitroglycerin-containing ing wrapper of an outer wrapper o explosive having a contact bibulous material Incased in f moisture-excludingmaterial said bibulous material being adapted to'absorb nitroglycerin freed by freezing and thawing. I
3. A cartridge f erin-containing ex absorb nitroglyceri thawing.
4. A cartridge formed with ,-.a nitroglycoi'med with a nitroglyclosive having a contacting wrapper of b ottingaper adapted "to" by freezing and n free erin-containing explosive having a contacting wrapper of blotting paper incased 1n anouter wrap er of moisture-excluding material vsaid b otting-paper being adapted to absorb nitroglycerin thawing.
4 of suitableto absorb Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
into the hole with the stick,
reed by freezing and -5. A cartridge formed with a nitroglyc grin-containing mg wrapper of explosive having a contact: blotting-paper incased in an outer wrap er of paraflin paper said bloteing glycerinfreed by In presence beadapted to absorb nitro-- freezing and thawing;
