Description
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEToE.
ELBRIDGE LLEWELLYN SCIZIBNERy OF AMESBURY, .'hIASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO REUBEN ALTON COUSINS, F PORTLAND, MAINE.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. llLnmooI-i L. SCRIBNER, a citizen of the l'nited States; residing at Amesbury, in the county ot' Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'renches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to wrenches and partienlarly to that type which are adapted to be used as nut or pipe wrenches.
The object of the invent-ion is the provision of means for holding the jaws in adjusted position for ditl'erent sizednuts or pipes and means for disengaging said holding means so that the jaws will be returned to their normal position.
A further object is to provide a wrench of the character described with an alined handle and jaw shank7 together with a jaw on the handle and means for holding the jaw shank under constant. spring pressure whereby when operating upon pipes or nuts either are firmly gripped and are under constant pressure at all times.
A further object is the provision of a wrench of this character which may be readily engaged and disengaged from pipes or nuts in order to facilitate. the work in hand.
'ith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists. of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevati'on; Fig. 2 isa side elevation with vthe side member taken away and the jaws in normal closed position; Fig. 3 is a similar view with the jaws locked in a predetermined extended position; F ig. 4 1s a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the shank and operating 'od removed from the'handle easing. Fig. C is a transverse sectional View on the line 6 6 of F ig. l.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the handle portion of the device which is composed of two members 2 and 3 separated at their outer ends by a block 4 having a central aperture 5 therein for a purpose to be hereinafter described. .The forward end of these members are separated by spacing blocks or members t3 and 7, both of which have extension ears S corresponding with similar ears 9 on the side members 2 and 3 and through which attaching bolts or rivets l0 are adapted to pass. vThe upper end of the members 2 and 3 are extended out at 1l to form the supporting members ot the lower or handle jaw 12 and these members are braced by an outstanding lug 13 corresponding to a similar lug 1l on the opposite side integral with the spacing block T. These lugs are riveted to the side members 2 and 3` by suitable rivets l5 and secured between the jaw projections 11 is a toothed aw 1G. This jaw is removably secured by the bolts 1T. The member 7 -is ont away to form an inclined surface 18 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Slidably mounted between the members and 3 and the members 6 and 'T is a shank 19 carrying upon its outer end the movable jaw 20 which has the removable serrated jaw piece 21 secured thereto by the bolts The mner end of the shank is bifurcated at 23 to receive the inner end of the operating bar 2l which is pivotally secured to the shank by the pin 25. Connected to the operating rod 24, near the shank, is a spiral spring 2G which surrounds the rod and has its other end removably connected to the handle 1 by a cross bolt 27 which passes through the holes 28 in the side members 2 and 3 so that it is possible to adjust the tension of the spring. The outer end of the rod 24 is threaded to enter a threaded socket in the shank operating handle 29 which passes through the aperture 5 in the spacer block 4. On the rear Side of the member 7 and secured in the lug 8 in any suitable manner is a spring arm 30 having threaded into its free end an engaging screw 31 whose inner end projects through an aperture 32 in the member 7 and is adapted to engage one of the notches or holes 33 for-ined in the back of the shank 19. This screw may be adjusted so as to enter holes of any dc th and may be locked in its adjusted position by the clamping nut 3-1. j
Slidably mounted upon the arm 30 is a sleeved gage member G which rides over tl ic inclined surface 1S so as to raise the spring and vpull the screw 3l out of engagement with the holes in which it is seated. Suitable graduations 35 are arranged on the jaw A CJ shank so as to be exposed when the shaft is projected and the holes il?) correspond to the quarter inch marks on the graduations so that the aw may be locked in almostJ any adjusted position Jfor different sized nuts or pipes without testing its accuracy.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention .*ill be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Varie-us` changes in the form. proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the append ed claims.
n Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described; a hollow handle, a jaw thereon, a shank slidably mounted in the handle, a jaw on said shank, a spring arm carried by the handle, means carried by the spring arm adapted to engage l the shank and to hold the jaws in predetermined adjusted positions, and means sliding on the spring arm adapted to render it inoperative.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a hollow handle, of a jaw thereoIn-a shank slidably mounted in the j aw. a jaw on said shank, an inclined surface on the handle, a spring arm carried b v the handle over the inclined surface, an adjustable pin carried by the spring arm and adapted to be projected thereby into engagement with one of a series of apertures in the shank. and a member slidably mounted on the spring arm and adapted to engage the inclined surface of the handle to throw said arm to inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
