G. C. RICHARDSON. BOAT PADDLE.
APPLIOATION FILED JAN.19, 1909.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
CHARLES C. RICHARDSON, OF LANSING, MICHIGAN.
BOAT-PADDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. R101-IARD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansing, in the county of Ingham and State of l\iIichigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boat-Paddles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to paddles or oars used for propelling boats in general, the object of the invention being to provide a novel reinforcement for an oar which will effect a'thorough protection of the blade of the oar along its entire longitudinal edges and also across the extreme edge thereof and which in addition to reinforcing the oar also serves as a balancing means for giving the proper counter-poise or balance to the oar.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction., combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan view of a paddle embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on an enlarged scale taken on the line 2---2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the reinforce, showing Athe inanner of notching the same.
Referring to the drawings, l designates an ordinary hand-operated paddle to which the improved reinforce, shown at 2 is applied but it will be understood that as the description proceeds, the reinforce may be utilized in connection with any oar as well as the paddle, illustra-ted in the drawings.
In carrying out the invention, both of the longitudinal edges of the blade lare grooved in substantially semi-circular form as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and the extreme edgel or outer corners of the blade are grooved in the same manner. A metal binder, preferably in the form of wire of copper or other suitable metal is laid in the groove so formed and extended continuously around the extremity of the oar and along the longitudinal Specification of Letters atent.

edges thereof well up to the stock 4 of the paddle where the ends of the reinforce are secured firmly to the opposite sides of the blade or stop as shown in Figs. l and S.
An effective vay of fastening the ends of the metal reinforce is illustrated in Figs. l, I5 and et, and in the latter figure, it will be observed that each end portion of the reinforce is provided with one or more notches 5 in the outer face thereof while staples 6 or their equivalent are driven into the blade or stock of the paddle the outer connecting portions of the staples resting in the notches 5 and in that way being brought flush with the opposite edges of the oar or paddle as illustrated in Figs. l and 3.
By means of the construction above described, the entire edge of the blade of the oar or paddle is reinforced including both side edges and the extremity corners of the ,blade while the reinforce is prevented from creeping by the notch and staple arrangement described. The blade of the oar is thus thoroughly protected both from wear and from splitting and the weight of the reinforce is so distributed as to form an effective balance for the oar or paddle z a whole.
I claim:
1. The combination with the blade of an oar or paddle formed in its side and extreme edges with a continuous groove, of a metal reinforce or binding laid in said groove and having the ends thereof firmly secured to opposite sides of the oar or paddle, substantially as described.
2. The combination with the blade of a paddle or oar provided with a continuous groovey along' the opposite edges and the extremity thereof, of a reinforcing wire laid in said groove and having the end portions thereof notched, and fasteners driven into the oar or paddle and engaging said notches.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES C. RICHARDSON.
Vitnesses FLOYD J. BowMAN, Crus. S. Emaux'.
