Description

@aient @Mira vCHARLES HAMMOND, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 93,614, dated August 10, 1869,
IMPRO'VV'EMENT IN CLEA'V'ERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.'
To allwhom yit may concern l Be it known that I, CHARLES HAMMOND, of `Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Oleaver's and other like instruments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a ferrnle, having a socket for receiving the hafndle, and wings arranged to grip the blade ota clearer or other' like instrument, allsubstantially as described hereafter, so that the hold ofthe handle on the blade may be increased in tenacity.
In order to enable others i0 make my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner oi' constructing the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part ofV this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of a cleaver with my iinprovement;
Figure 2, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, iig. l; Figure 3, a perspective viewof the ferr-ole; and Figui-e4, a' sectional view of an ordinary cleaver. Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
A represents the bla-de of the cleaver; B, the handle; and D, the improved ferrule, by which the handle is secured to the blade.
A lip, a, onV the blade, projects a short distance into the wooden handle, where the latter is fitted snugly into the ferrule D, tln'oughwhich, as well .as through the handle and lip, passes a rivet, b.
Besides the socket lfor receiving the handle, the ferrule is furnished with two wings, ff, between which a portion of the blade is griped, as clearly shown in the drawing, the wings being riveted to the blade, as shown in tio'. 2.
Itcwill be evident that by thus causing the ferrule to grip a portion of thefblade, the hold of the handle on the saine is increased in tenacity, the wings preventingv the handlefrom y-ieldingwhen it is subjected to severe shocks and'strains, which. it is very liable to do when attached in the ordinary manner, as shown in fia. 4..
Dlt will be evident that although my invention is illustrated as applied to a cleaver, it may be used with goodeiiect in securing the blades of other instruments to handles. y
I claim a-s ihy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe ferrule D, having a socket for receiving the i handle A, to which the errule is secured, and'wings f f, arranged to grip the blade of a cleaver or other like instrument, and riveted orotherwise secured to the latter, all substantially as and for the purpose
