Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed March 6, 1908. Serial No. 419,419.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I; EMIL M. LOEVVENTHAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockawa'y in thecounty of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vatch-Guards, of which the following is a specification;
The invention relates to improvements in watch guards and has particular reference to a device provided with means for preventing the sudden withdrawal of a watch from a wearers pocket.
In the following is described in connection with the accompanying drawings one embodiment of the invention the features thereof being more particularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is an enlarged side elevation of the device showing the respective parts thereof in their normal or set position; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side eleva tion of the device showing the relation of the parts after the grippers have been displaced from their respective bearing surfaces; Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of the device; and Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the grippers illustrating in connection therewithmeans for holding or resetting the same.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts through out the several views- In the drawings 1 represents a watch pro vided with the well known stem 2 and watch ring 3.
4 indicates a stud or pin fastened to said watch ring 3 as at 5 by means of pivotally mounting said watch ring 3 in reception hole or hearing 6. Said stud or pin 4 is preferably of circumferential form and has formed on its extreme upper end a ring 7 adapted to receive the end of watch chain 8. Said stud 4 at approximately its central portion thereof is provided with a shoulder 9, said shoulder 9 being had by means of tapering the shank 10 of said stud 4, the object of said shoulder 9 being hereinafter described. 11 indicates a series of arms mounted on said stud 4 as at 12 which have formed at their outer ends bearings 13 adapted to receive pin 14 carrying grippers 15. Said pin 14 has wound thereon a minute coil spring 16 having one of its ends fastened to said pin 14 and its other end bearing against the outer surface of the grippers 15. It is not essential that said arms 11 be formed as above described but they may be mounted on a disk provided with suitable lugs adapted to receive pins and form bearings for the above described grippers 15. 17 indicates a button provided with a sleeve 18 slidably mounted on the tapered shank portion 10 of stud 4 and has suitably cut therein a plurality of holes 19 adapted to register with each of said grippers 15. The device as shown is designed to receive four grippers but this construction is not essential as there may be one, two or three grippers used and the device still be practical for the uses and objects of the invention. Holes 19 described as being formed in said button 17 have their outer surfaces beveled as at 20, the object of the same being to provide a surface to permit grippers to engage any other surface when in their released or projected positions. The other edges 21 of said holes have formed therein a shoulder 22 adapted to receive the points 23 of said grippers 15 when in their set or normal positions.
24 indicates a coil spring having one of its ends fastened to button 17 as at 25 and the other end to the disk or arms 11 as at 26, said spring 24 being of sufficient strength to draw button or sliding head 17 downwardly after grippers 15 have been displaced from their bearing surfaces in the edges of said holes 19 immediately upon a slight pull or strain on watch chain 8, the travel of said sliding head or button 17 being regulated by shoulder 9 formed in stud 4. The operative parts of the device, including the grippers 15, may be inclosed in a housing of any suitable material such as metal, the same material as that of the body of the device. Said casing comprises a hood 27 fastened to the under side of sliding head or button 17 telescopically joining with a hood 28 mounted on disk or bearings 13 carrying grippers 15, the object of said casing being to provide means whereby the operative parts of the device may be inclosed in order to prevent dust and other foreign substances from entering the intricate parts of the device.
The device when in use is set in the position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, that position being its normal position. I1nmediately upon a slight pull or drag on chain 8 sliding head or button 17 will move slightly downwardly and release grippers 15, permitting them to extend or project through holes 19, the points 23 of said grippers 15 catching in the cloth or other surfaces in the pocket of the wearer of such a device preventing at all times the absolute withdrawal of a watch from a wearers assists in resetting the grippers after thesliding head or button 17 is again put in its original or normal position.
29 designates a feather mounted in sleeve 18 engaging featherway 30 formed in the body of shank 10, the object of the same being to prevent the sliding head 17 from turning circumferentially around the axis of said stud or shank 10. This is not essential as said shank may have formed therein a groove adapted to receive a tongue carried by said sleeve 18.
The device as herein shown and described may be varied in many ways, particularly in size, shape and structural form, and minor details of construction may be re sorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
l/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A device of the character described comprising a stud provided with means adapted to engage a watch-ring at one end and a chain at its other end, a body formed on said stud, grippers mounted 1n said body, a hood mounted upon and surrounding said body, means for holding said grippers in their normal positions, a sliding head mounted on said stud provided with a hood, the hood of said body being adapted to telescopically engage the hood of said sliding head to form a casing for said grippers, means formed in said sliding head adapted to permit said grippers to project therethrough, means for returning said grippers to their normal positions, and means formed on said stud adapted to limit the moviement of said grippers and said sliding hea 2. A device of the character described including a stud provided with reception holes at both ends thereof, bearings formed thereon, grippers mounted in said bearings, a sliding head mounted on said stud, holes formed in said head adapted to permit said grippers to extend therethrough, a spring mounted around said stud engaging said bearings and sliding head adapted to force said grippers through said head, a shoulder formed on said stud adapted to limit the movement downwardly of said sliding head, means carried by said grippers adapted to assist in resetting said sliding head and grippers, and a casing therefor.
3. A device of the character described including a stud provided with reception holes at both ends thereof, an auxiliary body mounted on said stud provided with bearings, grippers mounted in said bearings, a sliding head, a spring mounted on said stud rigidly fastened to said auxiliary body and head, holes formed in said head adapted to permit said grippers to pass therethrough, a shoulder formed on said stud adapted to limit the movement of the grippers through said head, and a telescopically joined casing surrounding said grippers and spring.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EMIL M. LOEWVENTHAL.
