FRITZ WALTER, OF KfiNIGSIBERG, GERMANY.
CORD-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 14., 1908.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909 Serial No. 457,627.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRITZ \VALTER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Konigsberg, Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clamps for cords or ribbons connected with blinds, shutters, or the like, which cords or ribbons are generally guided between a stationary Wall and a roller and are held or clamped in position by means of a cam-lever.
My invention comprises a particular novel construction of the cam-lever, which partly incloses the roller and is so journaled on the axis of the roller that the weight of the tam-lever will cause it to move into the clamping position when the cord or ribbon is released.
Reference is to be had to the accompany ing drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cordclamp embodying my invention, with parts broken away and Fig. 2 is afront elevation thereof.
The roller or pulley c for the cord is journaled at b in a case a wnich may be pivoted to a wall-platef in such a manner as to swing about a vertical axis determined by the trunnions f a. The cam lever (Z is provided with a handle 0 and is mounted to swing on the same axis Z) on which the pulley 0 is mounted. The outer portion of the lever is gradually thickened toward the handle, as shown in Fig. 1, so that a cam is produced. As shown in Fig. 2, the lever (Z is forked or chambered so as to partly inclose the pulley c. The handle 6 and the thickening of the cam-lever referred to above cause it to have a tendency to swing toward the clamping position, that is in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
The operation will be readily understood: If a downward pull is exerted on the cord or ribbon, friction will cause the cam-lever to turn in a direction contrary to that of the arrow and the circumference of the pulley 0 will thus be cleared so that the cord may engage the pulley and cause it to rotate. In this manner I prevent scraping of the cord. If the cord is released, the cam-lever returns to its former position and clamps the cord between the wall of the casing a and the cam surface of the lever. If desired the clamping effect may be increased by pressing downward on the lever e. \Vhen it is desired to let down the blind, curtain or other article connected with the cord, the lever should be held in its inoperative position manually until the blind, etc., has reached the desired position.
I claim as my invention:
A cord clamp comprising a case having a wall adapted to be engaged by the cord, a pivot carried by said case, a pulley mounted on said pivot, a cam lever mounted to swing on the said pivot, said lever comprising a projecting arm, two side plates mounted on said pivot, one at each side of the pulley, and a cam member extending from one of said side plates to the other across the face of the pulley and partially surrounding the pulley, an aperture being left between the outer surface of said cam member and the said wall of the case, and the weight of said projecting arm being such as to give it a tendency to move toward its clamping position.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
