UNITED srarnsrarnnr onrien.
RICHARD T. FOLEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO'TIMOTHY J. FOLEY AND RICHARD T. FOLEY, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1909.
Application filed. September 22, 1308. Serial No. 454,256.
ated and not liable to derangement and Consequent leakage.
The invention consists in certain details of construction and arrangements of `parts by wliiehthe above objects are attained,to be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
The accom in ino drawinos form a )art of this specification and show the invention as appl'iedto. an ordinary faucet or bib-cock'. Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal ver-tical section, partlyin elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate the saine parts in all the figures.
A is the body or casing of the faucet having the usual flange A1 and screw-threaded nipple A2, anda diaphragm or partition3 in the horizontal portion of which is a conical valve-seat A4. On the body .of the faucet and forming part of the valve-easing is a vertical tubular neck A arranged axially of the valve-seat, in which is loosely mounted a vertically movable valve-plug l having its lower end eoned to 'match to the seat and carrying at'thev upper end a tianged.
head lL upon whieh pressure is exerted to foree it to its seat and by which it.- is lifted therefrom through a helical spring C inclosing the plugr` abutting at its lower end against a guide U in the easing and at the upper end against the under face of the head. p
The valve-plug is forced to its seat by a nut or screw-cap D inelosing the upper end of the neck A5 andengaged therewith by internal threads matching to`eorresponding .threads A7 on the exterior of the neck.
From the interior of the cap depends a eentrally arranged follower D1 against which the head B1 of the valve-plug impinges. By unserewing the cap the plug is per- 'rising andsu-llting' movements.
inittedV to rise from its seat through the expansive force of the spring C, and a reverse vmoi-ement, through the action of the follower Dl, forces it to its seat in opposition to the liftof the spring.
The plug is guided by its head B1 matching the interior of the neck at the upper end, and at the lower end by passing through the opening in the guide A, the exterior of the latter also serves to center the spring.
At the upper end of the aneck is an exterior flange or fixed collar AS having an annular groove in which lies a packing ring E of suitable metal or other material, fitting closely to the interior face of the cap and serving to prevent the escape of any leakage around the plug to the screw-threads A7. The under 'face of this fiange AS also serves as a stop for the pins or screws F inserted through the wall of the cap after the parts have been assembled, and limits the upward movement of the Cap, thus preventing` the accidental removal of the latter. y
It will be noted that the valve-plug is unattaehed and therefore free to adjust itselic to its seat, t-herounded upper tace of the head matching to the corresponding hollow in the under face of the follower permits slight changes in position of the plug in adjusting itself to the seat while insuring tight contact therewith when in the closed condition and thus obviates the necessity of great accuracy 'in alinement of the plug relatively to the seat and other parts of the valve.
Surrounding` the follower Dl is a depending tiange ,Dgimatching the interior of the 'neet-rand serving to `guide the cap l) in its The cap is provided withradial arms ll atlording a eonvenient turning means.
Moditieat'ions ma;7 he lnade within vfide limits in adapting the invention to meet the requirennnts of various eondit ions and forms of valves. Although the invention is shown and described as applied to a faucet for vatei' or other fluids it willV be understood that it will serve for steam or other purposes.
l claim l.. ln a valve, a casing with a. partition with valve seat and a. guidel in line therewith,
against the 'flange of said head, a screw cap having threaded engagement with the said neck and provided With a centrally arranged follower impinging against the head of said valve, the outer end of said neck having an `exterior flange with annular groove and a packing ring in saidl groove and fitting the-interior Wall of the cap,
2. In a valve, a casing With' a partition With valve seat and a guide in line therewith, a tubular neck and Valve plug loosely moviablerand guided by 'said guide and fitted to lsaid seat and having a flanged head, a spring -`around said plug abutting at its -loWer end against said guide and at its 'upper Iend against the flange of said head, a screw cap having threaded engagement with the said neck and provided with a centrally arranged A follower impinging against the head of said valve, theouter endof said neck having an said spring,`a flange on the exterior of said neck having-an annular groove therein,
packing ring in said groove, and pins on the interior of said cap arranged to strike said flange and limit the upward movement of.
said cap said cap having a depending annular flange received Within the upper end of said neck. y
'4. In a valve, alloose valve-plug having a head at the upper end, a valve-Seat for the lower end, a tubular neck in Which said plug is' guided, a spring inclosing said plug, abuti 'a packixw ring 1n said groove, a depending annular ange on said cap between the follower and the annular Wall of the cap and received vWithin the' upper end of the neck vand pins on the interior of Said cap arranged to strikesaid flange and limit the upward movement of said cap. I
In testimony that I claim the invention above setforth I aflix my signature, in pres ence of tivo Witnesses.
