Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
E. E. MecAETY, J. w. OEE, AND E. J. ORE, on FLORENCE, GEORGIA. y
-IMPROVEIVIEN'I IN COMBINATION-FLOWS.
To a/ZZ whom, it 11m/,y concern,.-
Be it known that we, B. F. MGCAETY, J. W. OER, and R. J. ORE, of Florence, in the county of Stewart and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Combination- Plow; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure lis a side view. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the adjusting-plates detached. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the fastening-bolt r.
The object of this invention is to construct a simple, cheap, convenient, and durable plow, which can readily be adjusted to operate either as a single plow, a double cultivating-plow, or a covering-plow, and the shares of which, when operating as a covering-plowor cultivator, can be adjusted to cut the furrows anywhere from four to twelve or more inches apart.
In the drawings, A indicates the beam;A B B, the handles; C, the standard that supports` the upper part of the handles; b, a round connecting the handles; b, the. eyebolt, to which the lower end of the handles is attached; D, a stout beam or plate on the right side of beam A, to the outer edge of which the right-hand plow-standard, E, is fastened; F, a similar beam, but longer than the other, fastened on the left-hand side of beam A, and having the left -hand plow standard, G, attached to its outer side; I J, two separating or adjusting plates, lying between the beams D A and F A, respectively, for the purpose of bringing the plows to a sufficient distance from the center of beam A; e e e, adjusting-holes in the upper part of standards E G, by which the plows can be set higher or lower, as may be desired; H H, braces tov strengthen the plowstandards; m, a bolt passing laterallythrough the parts A D F I J, for the purposeof clamping and holding them together at their front end; N, a similar bolt provided with a bent hook or handle, n, on one end and a screw-nut on the other, and passing through the said parts at their rear end, and also through the plowstandards, for the purpose of fastening said Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 93.543, dated August 10, 1869.
parts together; and O, the rear plow-standard, supported by the main beam A and at its rear end. v
The plow-standards E G are made straight or nearly straight on one side, and widening on the other toward their lower end, leaving on one side a recess at their upper end, so that when fastened to the beam D or F, with the straight side inward, as shown in the drawings, the center of the plows will come considerably outside of the edge of the beam; but when fastened to said beams with the opposite side inward, the center of the plows will be brought verynearly underthe edge of the beam. The plows are therefore adjustable inward or outward by simply turning their standards side for side, andare further adj ustable by inserting or removing the spreaders I J. Their inclination is adjustable by means of the braces H H and the screw-nuts h h thereon. Their elevation is adjustable by means of the holes e e, and their relative position on the plow can be changed by removing the rear one altogether, and also by placing the left-hand one back at the rear end of beam F and fastening it there by the bolt r,
so Athat it shall throw the earth that it turns up over intov the furrow made by the righthand plow, which travels in advance of it. rlhe handles also may be detached from the beam F and attached to the main beam A, a change .which it will be necessary to effect whenever the parts G F I J D E are removed and the device employed as a single plow.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the device is ready to be employed asa covering-plow, the two shares I P running on each side of the seed and throwing the dirt inward, and aleveler (a plow, iron plate, or piece of board) being attached to the rear standard to scrape off and level the dirt.
For cultivating, the left-hand plow may be set back upon bolt r and the rear plow, O, removed.
For common plowing, the implement may be reduced to the form of a single plow, as above described.
All the parts may be adjusted to cach other in the best manner to adapt them to their Work.
When the handles are attached to the main beam, the eye-bolt b will be inserted into a tially in the manner and for the purposes set hole, u, provided for the purpose. forth.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure byLet- Iners Patent, is-
The combination of beams A D F, spreaders I J, bolts N m, plow-standards E G O, bolt 1, braces H H, standard C, and handles B B, all constructed to operate together substan- B. F. MCCARTY. J. NV. ORR. R. J. ORR.
