Description

'rama einer strut @imita --LUKE L. ,-KELLOGG, 0F LEONCENTRE, NEW YORK.
Letters PtentrNo. 93,537, (lated August 10, 1869.
IMPRovnMENT 1N PUMPS.
`The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom/ 'it lIna/y concern posite directions; and
lt consists inmoving each bucket in one direction through a passage, for the purpose oi' allowing water to pass through-it, and then moving 'it in exactly the contrarydirection through the same passage, for the purpose offorcing .the-water out of it.
ln the drawiugs- A is a mass of masonry or other suitablev material, in a well or other reservoir of water, and provided with two horizontal passages a, out of each of which opens a vertical passage, a', leading up into the pumpbarrel b, to the top of which pump is attached a hose, c.
The pump-handle'b is connected, by rods d, to the upper ends of the elbow-levers e, which` are suitably pivoted in the masonry, and the lower ends of which are opposite the months of the horizontal passages a. Two rods h, pivoted at their inner ends to the boxes i, are pivoted at `the other ends to the lower extremities of the elbow-levers e. The boxes c' are-,provided withvalves k, opening into the passage.
If force be applied tothe handle b suicient to Work it up and .down in theusual manner, at every- 11p-stroke, one box, t', will approach the mouth of the passage a, and water will pass through it into said passage.
At every down-stroke, the valve k closes, and the box i moves toward the verticalfpassage a', forcing the water along and up 'through said passage, ont at the hose c, or out at the spout c.
The other box operates at the same time in the opposite direction, moving outward when the first box is moving inward ,'alid rice tersa, and pouring its stream into the pump-barrel alternately with the iirst box, so as to keep4 the barrel always full, and a continuous iiow issuing from it.
I do not include the .double action of the pump in my claim, as this is effected by a mere duplication of Y parts.
Having thus described'my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-'-A The'hox yi, provided with the valve k, in combination with the connecting-rod h, the said' box and rod being arranged to operate in a horizontal direction,
and with the lever e, connectingrod d, handle 11', pump b, and passages a a, the latter passage' being turned in 'a horizontal direction so as to receive the box i and rod h, and iit the whole apparatus for use in shallow LUKE L@ KELLocG;
