UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
CARL H. SCHMIDT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in removable fastening means for garments, such as skirts or other garments, though it may be used in any situation where it is desired to provide means for temporarily fastening together two flaps of cloth, or the like; this invention being somewhat in the nature of an improvement on the garment fastening device forming the subject of Letters Patent No. 842,498, granted to me on January 29, 1907.
My object is to provide a simple and cheap construction of fastener for the above purpose which shall be easy of manipulation and serve to releasably hold the flaps of the garment securely together, and thus prevent its gaping.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a flapequipped portion of a skirt equipped with my fastening means, showing one of the flaps turned back the better to illustrate the manner of securing the loop-pieces to the flaps. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of one of a series of loop-pieces employed on one of the flaps. Fig. 3 1s a similar view of one of a series of loop-devices employed on the other portion of the flap; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the skirt, one of the loop-pieces illustrated in Fig. 3, and the fastening-rod.
In the construction illustrated, my invention is shown as applied to. a skirt which is represented at 5, this skirt being provided with the usual flaps 6 and 7 at which the garment is intended to be fastened together on the wearer. The flap 6 is provided on its outer face with loop-pieces 8, spaced apart to form a vertical series of loop-devices. I prefer to provide the loops 8 in the form illustrated, the preferable way of forming these loops being that of stamping a suit able blank (not shown) from sheet-metal, and bending it to form a raised loop, or eye, 9 extending from a plate 10, the loop being of less width than the plate, and the plate being provided with thread-attaching perforations 11 at which the loop-pieces may be Specification of Letters Patent.

secured to the garment in the positions as above stated and illustrated, it being pre ferred that the central portion of the loopdevice from which the eye 9 is formed be struck up as represented at 12. The flap 7 near its free vertical edge has secured to it on its rear side a vertical series of hook-devices 13, these h0ok-devices being so posi tioned on the flap as to cause them to alternate with the devices 8 when the flap 7 is folded flatwise against the flap 6. The form of hook-device 13 which I prefer to employ comprises a plate 11 provided with perforations 15 at which it is adapted to be sewed upon the flap 7. Each of the devices 13 is formed with a hook 16 which extends from one lateral edge of the plate 14, and preferably integral therewith, in a trans verse direction, the metal of the plate 1-1 beneath the free end of the hook being slitted and struck up to form a stop 17 against which the hook 16 near its free end is caused to yieldingly bear. The devices 13 are so positioned on the flap 7 as to cause the free ends of the hooks to extend inwardly from the outer margin of the flap carrying them. The devices 8 and 13 so positioned on the flaps afford successive alining loops or eyes parallel with the flaps, in which a fastening strip 18 may be located for holding the flaps together, and thereby close the opening in the skirt. The strip 18 is preferably of thin spring steel to adapt it to flex under the various conditions to which it may be subjected when worn by the user, and is provided near its upper end with an off-set l9, and at its extreme upper end with an eye 20, at which eye the free end of a tape 21, fastened to the skirt at its opposite end, is connected, the ofl-set portion 19 being provided for engaging with the uppermost of the devices 8 when the strip is inserted through these de vices for the purpose hereinafter stated.
The manner of using my improved fastener is as follows: Assuming the flaps of the skirt to be in the position illustrated in Fig. 1, and the strip 18 withdrawn from the loop-devices, the operator first inserts the strip 18 from the upper edge of the skirt, through the eyes 9 of the loop-devices 8 and a transverse opening 22 below the lowermost loop-device, to a position in which the off-set 19 engages with the eye 9 of the up permost device, this off-set thereby limiting the extent of insertion of strip 18 through the loops 9. It is preferred that this operation of applying the strip 18 to the loopdevices 8 be performed before the skirt is placed in position preparatory to securing it on the wearer. \Vith the skirt in position on the wearer and the strip 18 in place, the flap 7 is secured to the flap 6 by hooking the parts 16 upon those portions of the strip 18 which extend between the loop-devices 8, the hooks in this operation moving transversely of the strip 18. The strip 18 and the devices 13 are so. proportioned that the width of the former is less than the length of the loops formed by the hooks 16 and stops 17, whereby when the parts 16 are hooked over the strip 18 as described, the strip will be confined between the inner ends of the hooks and the stops 1?, as illustrated in Fig. i, of one of the hook-devices. Vhen the flaps 6 and 7 are secured together as described, the strip 18 serves to effectually prevent the separation of these flaps while it remains in position. \Vhen it is desired to unfasten the garment, the operator draws up on the strip 18 thereby withdrawing it from the several devices 8 and 13, whereupon the flaps 6) and 7 separate.
It will, of course, be understood that the loop and hook devices instead of being secured to the flaps 6 and 7, respectively, may
. one preferred. It will also be noted that if desired the garment may be fastened together by first applying the flap to the flap 6 to cause these flaps to lie flatwlse together,
and the strip 18. may then be inserted through the devices 8 and 13 thus arranged in staggered relation.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination, mutually overlapping garment-flaps, a series of separate loops secured on a face of one of the flaps, a fastening strip adapted to be inserted through said loops, and a series of eye-shaped loop-devices secured to the opposed face of the other of said flaps to alternate with said firstnamed loops and having the walls of their end-portions severed, vwhereby the severed loops may be successively applied to embrace those portions of the strip which extend between the first-named loops.
