a device of the character mentioned which will be. of such construction as to be particularly applicable for use'l in the event of the couplers of a railway car pulling out o1' being otherwise disabled.
A furthenobject is to provide a coupling device as mentioned which may be expefan enlarged detailof thel'clamping means` ditiously and readily applied, and which,
when applied, will be adapted to efliciently serve inthe capacity of a car coupler, another object being to'provide a coupler which will be' strong and durable, compara-tively simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
f OtherobjeCts will appear hereinafter.
l With these objects 1n view, our invention consistsffina coupling device characterized as yabove; mentioned and in certain details ofv construction and arrangement of. parts all aswill be vhereinafter fully described' and particularly ointed out in the claims.
Our inventlon will be'morereadily understood by reference to the' accompanying drawings forming tion, and in. which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the preferred form of our invention, Fig. 2 is a top .plan view thereof, Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sect-ion taken on the line a of Fig. l, Fig. 4 is a substantially similar transverse section taken on the line'y-g/ of Fig. 1, the lookin means illustrated therein being shown in isengaged 'positio'mand Fig. 5 is employed in conjunction with the connecting cable embodied in our'invention.v
Referring now to the drawings l--l indi cate clamping devices, the same being identical in construction. v Because of said clamping devices being alike in every detail; inthe following description one only a 'part of vthis specifica-A plied to one being applicable as well'to the other. 'The clamping device; l consistsofa gated portion 4 thereof. channel-formed in construction, that is reinforcing ribs. 5 are formedatytlle lateral strength proportional to its iweight face of the portion 4 is formed intot'ran'sthe'reception of the b ight'S) lof preferably any other suitable material might be` enr-n securing the extremities of `said cable 1'0 'conportions o saidmember 11,-- and 'nuts' 13 threaded upon said end portions ofl the latsaid member 11'it is evident that thecable will be rmly and securely gripped` therein'.

wliich'dt is slidably mounted. The inner or lcontacting surface -of said jaw portion 18'is preferably providedat its verticallyextending edges with projecting ribs 1'8 the upper extremities ofjvhich are provided with pro jeciionsl Vsimilar to tliej projections 1-7 provided iipon'the jaw 'portion 14 before' described. Alining` slots 21 provided at the ment'w'vi'tl'i the slot 17 provided in the jaw portion .14, -are adapted to serve in the same -eapacity as the last named slot. Rockingly Inountedin said member 3 upon a centrally positioned horizontally disposed pin 22 the extremities of which rest respectively in the'.
body portion 23 of said member and the vertical wall 24 provided for the support of said pin, is a worm gear adapted to mesh 2G indicates an integra-l hand lever projecting from said gear A portion 2T of said gear is flattened as clearly shown in Figs. .3 and 4. By such provision upon rocking' the lever 26 to a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 4,1the worin will be entirely disengaged from Athe teeth of the member 2, whereupon i it is evident'that the jaw member 3 may be slid to any position upon the portion 4 ot' said member 2. l'lence, a speedy at'irance- 'nient of our device during thc'application thereof is effected. l l
In use our device is preferably applied to the front end-beam of the rear car and the rear end-beam of the front car to be coupled, althoiiglithe same ymay be applied to any other suitable support provided at the adjacent ends of the cars.
While we have shown what we deem to be the preferable form of our device, We donot wish,v to be limited thereto, asthere might be manychanges made in the details lof construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of our invention. i And while we have designed our dvicc i with special reference to railway ears, we may use the same 1n any other` connection to which it is applicable.
j Having described our invention what We Iatent is:V i
