MATCH-SAFE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL H. PAULUS, of Manitowoc, lVisconsin, have invented a Match-Safe, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient receptacle for matches in combination with a second removable receptacle for the burned ends thereof, the whole in compact compass and of neat and artistic appearance.
My invention comprises in its essentials an upper receptacle for the matches and a lower holder or socket in which fits a removable receptacle for burned ends; the whole having the shape and general appearance of an ordinarydrinking-glass or tumbler.
An accessory feature comprises a novel form of bail or hanger whereby the matclr safe may be supported from a gas-bracket, a wall-hook, nail, or other like object.
The preferred form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation thereof, partly in section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the match-safe with the burned-end receptacle removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the burned-end receptacle.
In these drawings every reference letter and numeral refers always to the same part:
The body A of the safe is made preferably from sheetmetal, and its shape may be described as that of an ordinary tumbler, or slightly tapered cylinder the lower portion whereof is cut away on opposite sides leaving depending bars a and at the bottom a circular socket M, the bottom of which is or may be roughened as shown at c so that matches may be ignited thereon. The socket a is adapted to receive a tapered cylindrical receptacle B, which fits loosely therein and can be inserted and removed from either side of the bars a. Said receptacle B is destined to receive the burned ends of the matches while the matches themselves are placed in the upper part of receptacle (1, formed by a horizontal bottom-plate a which closes the upper portion of the body A.

The safe is supported by a pivoted bail made of a pair of wires C having hooked ends 0 engaging in holes a at the opposite sides of the body A near the upper edge thereof, said wires being twisted together in the center as shown at c and having their ends recurved to form supporting hooks c which are adapted to engage with any object such as a chandelier, lamp-bracket, shade holder, wall-hook, or nail, in case such object should not be adapted to pass through the opening of the bail C. 1
In use a match when wanted is removed from the holder a, and after using,the burned end is placed in the receptacle B. The lat ter can be taken out and emptied at convenient intervals without necessity of removing the safe from its place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
A match-safe comprising a body-member of sheet metal or like material, said bodymember comprising an approximately cylindrical match-receptacle at its upper portion closed by a horizontal bottom-plate, a pair of bars on opposite sides thereof depending from said match-receptacle and continuous with the sides thereof, and a circular socket on the lower end of said bars forming a continuation thereof, in conjunction with an approximately cylindrical burned-end receptacle adapted to fit in said socket, the whole having a generally cylindrical form substantially as described, and a pivoted bail comprising two curved wires forming a loop whose ends are pivoted in holes in the upper edges of said body-mem her, and which are united in the center and the ends recurved to form two oppositely disposed hooks.
