JOHN E. BROWN, OF OGDEN, UTAH,
COVER-RETAINER.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Serial No. 473,358.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 20, 1909.
thereto at 11, is a suitable piece of strap iron (12) having upper angularly deflected distal ends (13 and 1et),the' said terminal (13) being fastened contiguous the inside portion of the smaller semi-circular section (8) by the rivets or other suitable fastening means (15), and the end (14) being similarly flexed and in addition thereto having an extremital hook (16) for engagement with the upper edge of the opposite semi-circular section (7). Apertures (17 and 18) are disposed in the angular portion (14) and the section (7) for exact registration so that if the occasion should require a pin, or other suitable device, could be readily inserted through the entire assemblage.
It will be seen that when the sections (7 and 8) are organized in the aforesaid manner the same assume a substantial continuity of each other and present the general appearance of a circle. Looking at the contour of the sections from this aspect, a plurality of screws (19) are disposed atangles of 45 about the circumference of the structure, and obviously concentrically therewith. The outer distal end (20) of each screw is slightly enlarged and bifurcated,as at 21, the members or arms constituting such bifurcation being pointed and serving as prongs.
In practical use, the sections (7 and 8) are folded as will be found upon inspecting Fig. IV of the accompanying drawings. In this relation the complete device is inserted a short distance below the top edge of the receptacle (5), the cover (6) manifestly occupying a position between said retainer and To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN E. BROWN, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Ogden, in the county of lVebcr and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Retainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a cover retainer adapted to be utilized for packing ice cream shipments.
The object of the invention is to provide a cover retainer which is suited to any size tub, barrel, or wooden vessel.
Generally speaking, the invention comprises a pair of semi-circular sections of metal hinge'dly connected at their proximal ends and being equipped with means for engaging the inside portions of a given receptacle, the locking device serving to permit relative movement of the sections in order that they may be folded or knocked down to facilitate the insertion of the device, considered as an entirety, in the barrel.
To the accomplishment of the recited object, and others coordinate therewith, the preferred embodiment of my invention resides in that arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and embraced within the scope of the appended claims.
In said drawings :Figure I is a sectional view of the upper portion of an ice cream vessel, showing the embodiment of the invention. Fig. II is a perspective view of the cover retainer. Fig. III is a plan view of the device, and Fig. IV is a transverse secthe ice. Subsequently the sections are detional elevation of the cover retainer in a pressed at points adjacent the hinged confolded position. nection so that they will be extended until Referring more particularly to the drawthe section 7 contacts with the hook portion ings for a detail description of the inven- (16) of the strap iron (12), which as hereintion, the numeral 5 designates a barrel, tub before described, precludes further upward movement of said sections. In this position the prongs or bifurcated extremital portions of the screws 19 will engage the inside portion of the receptacle (5) in such manner as to avoid any possibility of the accidental displacement of the cover. By utilizing the screws (19) provision is made for a slight variation in the inner circumference of the top of the barrel.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new is 1. A receptacle cover retainer, comprising a pair of hinged sections having cover ea or packer used in ice cream shipments, having a fabric cover (6) which is designed to be held in place by the retainer. This retainer comprises a pair of semi-circular sections (7 and 8), the former being sufficiently large to inclose the latter and provide for free relative movement. Pursuant to this principle of the invention, the terminals of the sections (7 and 8) are positioned as to overlap each other and hingedly connected at diametrically opposite points, as 9, by a headed bolt (10). Extending at right angles to the bolt (10), and rigidly secured gaging means, said sections adapted to told when inserted in the receptacle and be eX- tended to cause the penetration of said engaging means.
2. In a cover retainer, the combination of a pair of semi-circular sections, means for permitting movement of said sections in one direction only, and adjustable means carried by each of the sections for engaging the cover.
3. In a cover retainer, the combination of a pair of semi-circular sections, one of said sections being smaller than the other section, means for permitting relative movement of the sections in one direction only, and adjustable means carried by each of the sections for engaging the cover.
4. In a cover retainer, the combination of" a pair of semi-circular sections, one of said sections being smaller than the other section, a rod for hingedly connecting the sections together, means for permitting relative movement of the sections in one direction only, and means carried by each section for engaging 'the sides of the cover.
5. In a cover retainer, the combination of a pair of semi-circular sections, one of said sections being smaller than the other section,
a rod =lor hingedly connecting the sections together, means for permitting relative movement of the sections in one direction only, and adjust-able means radiating from each of the sections for engaging the cover.
6.. In a cover retainer, the combination of a pair of relative movable sections, a strap iron rigidly secured to one of said sections and having means engaging the other section for permitting only downward movement of the sections.
7. A receptacle cover retainer, comprising a plurality of movable sections having coverengaglng means, said sections adapted to told when inserted in the receptacle and be extended to cause the cover engaging means to penetrate a cover.
8. A receptacle cover retainer, comprising a plurality of pivoted sections having-coverengaglng means, said sections adapted to told when inserted in the receptacle and be extended to cause the cover engaging means to penetrate a cover.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
