FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909.
Application filed May 12, 1908, Serial N0. 432,397.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, KINZIE GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Yazoo City, in the county of Yazoo and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to fasteners, and more particularly to such as are adapted to be used with traces or the like, and each of which consists of a hook having springcontrolled locking means for engaging the nose thereof and movable in a plurality of directions.
An object of this invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and serviceable fastener, consisting of a hook having a spring-controlled locking member, the latter being pivotally arranged upon the body of the hook so that it can be moved out of engagement with the end of the hook into an inoperative position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the class described having a spring-controlled locking member or tongue adapted to engage at the under side of the nose of the hook, and havingprojections or studs for engaging recesses in the nose thereof, the tongue being pivotally mounted so that after being disengaged from the hook against the tension of the spring, it can be pivoted laterally into an inoperative position.
The invention consists in the constructionv and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is ing drawings forming a part of this speciiication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side view of the invention showing it applied to a trace extension; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a trace eXtension showing the device as applied; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device showing the tongue in a plurality of unlocked positions; one of the positions being in dotted outline; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the tongue in an unlocked position; and Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5--5 of Fig. 1.
Before proceeding to a detailed description of my invention, it should be understood that I provide a fastener which is especially to be had to the accompany-V of engagement with the hook.
adapted to be used with traces or the like. In general, it consists of a body member adapted to be riveted to a trace extension, and having a hook integral therewith. T he nose of the hook is suitably undercut to receive a spring-controlled tongue, the latter having studs or projections for engaging recesses in thev undercut side of the hook. The spring which carries the tongue is pivotally arranged on the body member, so that the tongue, when depressed against the tension of the spring, may be moved out of engagement with the end' of the hook, into an inoperative position. A keeper on the body member is provided to limit the lateral movement of the spring. As shown in the drawings, a leather shield is provided to protect and cover the spring and body member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the extension of a trace; secured upon this trace extension by means of rivets 2 is a body member 3, of any suitable metal such as iron, steel or the like. The body member has a hook at at one end thereof and preferably integral therewith. The nose 5 of the hook has a suitable undercut portion 6 to receive a tongue 7 the latter has an extension 8 for engaging the undercut portion 6 of the hook. Located on this extension is a stud 9 adapted to engage in an opening 10 of the hook, and a substantially rectangular lug 11 adapted to engage a recess 12- at the outer end of the undercut portion of the hook, so that the tongue will be held in a locked position against lateral movement.
A spring 13, having one end pivotally connected to the body member 3 by means of a rivet 15 or the like, supports the tongue at the other end thereof. "Ihe spring is suitably bent so that an outward pressure is brought to bear on the tongue, and thereby causes it to lock firmly into position at the undercut portion of the hook. Rivets or screws 16 are used to secure the tongue to the spring.
Arranged on the body member is a keeper 17, of substantially inverted U-shape. This keeper serves to limit the lateral movement of the spring when the tongue is moved out As shown in the drawings, when my device is used in connection with a trace, I employ a shield 18 of leather or the like, for protecting the spring and body member of the device. The
shield may be either sewn or riveted into place upon the trace, the outer end thereof being free to permit of the movement of the tongue.
Having thus described vmy invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters i y ing member.
2. ln a fastener, .a flat body member adapted .to be secured to a trece and having e hook at one end, a ,locking member heving` one end pivotally secured to said body member near oneend thereof for a lateral movement, the free end of the looking member being adapted for looking engagementV`V with the hook, anda keeper on the body member adjacent to the pivoted end of the locking member for limiting the lateral movement of said locking member, the said keeper being arranged tov permit the lateral movement of `the locking member in either direction.
lIn testimony whereof I *have signed myl name to this specifioation in the presencev of two subscribing witnesses.
