APPLICATION FILED KAY 5, 1909.
Patented Sept. 7. 1909.
LORENZ SCHWARTZ, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 5, 1809'.
Serial No. 494,166.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lonmvz Sonwnmz, a citizen of Germany, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of 'lennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
M invention relates to improvements in onve ops, and the object of my invention is to produce an envelop, of simple construction, so made as to render it impossible to open the envelop without detection.
'ith this ob e -t in view. my invention consists in the construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved envelo with the upper flap raised, the tab being ent. Fig. 2 is a central cross section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the envelop with the parts opened out.
1 represents the body of the envelop, having a to flap 2, side flaps 3 and l, and a bottom ap 5. The side flaps 3 and 4 are erforated as shown at 6 and 7, and the bottom flap 5 as shown at S. The top flap is provided with at tab 9, and the body of the envelo is arranged so that the flaps will easily fol thereover, as indicated in dotted lines'in Fig. 3. The flaps 2 and tab 9 are provided with the usual adhesive material on the inside,'and the He 5 is also provided with adhesive materia as indicated in Fi 3. y
The slot 6 is a little wider than the slot 8, and the slot 7 is a little wider than the slot 6. The flap 4 is extended as shown at 10, and in this extension the slot 7 is made. The extension 10 is waterproof, so that it is impossible to open the envelop by moistening or otherwise after it has once been closed.
In preparing the envelop, the flaps 3 and 4 are folded over the body 1 and tie flaps 5 and 2 are then folded over the flaps 3 and 4, the adhesive material having been previously moistened. In usin the envelop the tab 9 is passed l1)Wt1l'( through the slots (t, 7 and 8, thc who 0 being then firmly. sealed together.
The envelop is no heavier than an ordinary envclo and can be easily manufactured in an ordinary envelop machine. After having been once sealed, however, owing to the particular arrangement of the slots and tab passing through them and the waterproof material of which the extension 10 is made, it cannot be opened without showing plainly that it has been tampered with.
I claim 2- An envelop'consisting of a rectan ilar body with a flap on eachIedge thereo the side and bottom flops being provided with perforations of the some length but of different widths, and the bottom flap being provided with adhesive material on its inside, one of said side flaps havin the end through which the slit is made waterproofed, the bottom and side flaps being adapted, to be folded over the body of the envelop with the flap having the water- )roofed portion on the inside, thh top flap eing provided with a central projecting tab, said tab and said flap being provided with adhesive material andsaidflap bei ",ada ted to be folded down over the othert rec ups and to have the tab passed up through said slit on the inside and to be sealed againstthe waterproofed portion of one of the side fla s, substantially as described.
n testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
LORENZ SCHWARTZ.
Witnesses HENRY CRAFT, M. R. WILLIS.
