To all whom it may concern:

Be 1t known that I, LINWOOD G. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, in the county of New.

York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifold Order or Sales Books, of which the following is a'specification.

The invention relates to improvements in manifold and order sales-books, and it consists in the novel features, structure and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide a very compact and convenient order or salesbook of durable character'adapted, among other purposes, for use by salesmen in taking orders for goods sold and by waiters in lmtels, restaurants and the like.

The sales-book of my. invention, in its preferred embodiment, comprises two hinged backs or cover-sections in line with each other, a set of independent original order slips loosely hinged on rings at the upper edge of the lower cover-section and adapted to be turned on said rings to lieupon the upper section or the lower section at will, a plate of metal or any suitable material hinged atits left hand edge to the left hand edge of the lower orbac'k cover-section and adapted to lie on said section or be turned laterally toward the left on its hinges from over said section, a carbon holder on the upper. edge of said plate for holding one or more sheets of carbon paper, and a set or bank of duplicate order slips secured at their lower ends-in a hin ed manner on rings at the lower edge of said plate and adapted to lie on-said plate or be turned on said rings from over the same, the entire set of duplicate order slips being [capable of being turned downwardly from over said plate without any thereof being bent or folded and also capablewvith said plate of being turned to the left from over the back coversection of the book. I preferably provide two sheets of carbon paperso-that two duplicate order slips may be prepared by writing on one original order slip. The relation of the parts of the book is suchthat, as required, some of the original order slips may be housed below the plate supporting the duplicate order slips and others extended upon the upper cover-section, while any one of the original slips may be on top of the .duplicate slips and-against the to carbon sheet by which the transfer is ma e to the duplicate slip of the writing made on the original slip.

The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which: I

25 the hinge by which said plate 20 is secured at its left hand edge to the left hand edge of the lower cover-section. The original order slips 18 are perforated and strung on the rings 23, and the duplicate order slips 19 are perforated and strung on the rings 24. The original order slips 18 and duplicate order slips 19 will be suitably lined or spaced and hear such data as may be required, inaccordance with the nature of the business in which the book may be used and these features will, of course, necessarily vary as circumstances and conveniences may suggest, and form no part ofv the present invention. The rings 23, 24 correspond with each other'and'each comprises a lower U-shaped section 26 and an upper swivel-section 27 (Fig. 2) Which'may be opened and closed, at will, to admit and retain the order slips.

In the construction of the back cover-section 15 I make use of a metal plate 28 covered with leather or other suitable material and of about the size desired for the coversection. The plate 28 stiffens the back coversection and enables it to form a durable support for the use of a salesman in writing on the checks, said back cover-section being usually held in one hand while thesalesman is writing on the checks with his other hand. The upper end of the plate 28 receives the rings 23, and said plate is slotted to receive the lower edges of the rings and grooved upwardly anddownwardly at opposite sides of the rings, as shown in Fig. 1, to-receive a pin 29, which extends through the grooved portions of the plate and through apertures in the lower edge portions of the rings. The plate 28 may be of aluminum and the upward grooves pressed in it adjacent to the rings 23 create upwardly curved sections 30 below which the pin 29 passes and the down wardly pressed grooves 31 create downwardly grooves 31. When the rings 23 are seated in slots inthe plate 28 and the pin 29 has beenpassed through them, the rings become detachably held in position and do not occupy unnecessary space in the book.

In Letters Patent granted to me on August 25, 1908, No. 897 ,245, I illustrate rings, numbered 22 in said patent, corresponding with the rings-23 of the present application, but the rings in said patent are not secured in a plate 28 constituting the main member of the back cover-section, but on a separate narrow folded plate.

' The original order slips or checks 18 strung on the rings 23 may all be housed below the plate 20 or they may all be turned on the upper opened cover-section 16 and any one of said checks or slips may be placed on the pad of duplicate order slips 19 in the manner fully explained in my aforesaid Letters Patent.

The plate 20 is preferably of aluminum and secured at its left hand edge to the left hand edge of the plate 28 by means of the hinges 25, and that part of the structure comprised in the plates 20, 28 is of very durable character, the same being of metal and the knuckles of the hinges 25 being integral with said plates and of considerable length so as toavoid any twisting action of the plate 20. The hinges 25'permit the plate 20 to be turned to the left from over the coversection 16 in the manner indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, thus exposing said cover-section to receive the original order slips 18. The material of the hinges 25 at fords a space between the facingsurfaccs .of the plate 20 and cover-section 15 adapted to conveniently house the original slips 18 and allow the plate 20 to lie flat on said slips.

At its upper end the plate 20 is formed with two parallel transverse slots 32, 33, respectively (Figs. 5 and (3), through which the upper ends of the two carbon sheets 21 and 22 are strung or threaded, said ends .of said sheets being-first passed dowmvardly through the/slot 32 and then returned upwardly through the slot 33. The carbon sheets 21, 22 are locked in position by means of a clamp 34 preferably formed of aluininum and pivotally secured, at 35, to the plate 20. The clamp 34 is a plate of metal folded upon itself and adapted to pass rather closely on the end of the plate 20 and folded end portions ofthe carbon sheets, as shown on an enlargedscale in Fig. 6. When the clamp 34 is in its closed position, shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the carbon sheets become locked at their upper ends and when the clamp 34 is turned outwardly on its pivot,

the slots 32, 33 become exposed and the carend of the plate 28, the lower members of said rings 24 being seated in slots 38, in-

dicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and there held by a pin 39 passing through oppositely formed grooves 40, 41 corresponding exactly with the grooves indicated in Fig. 1 as receiving the pin 29.

In the employment of the book hereinbefore described, the-original checks or orderslips 18 will initially be disposed below the plate 20, and the upperpcarbon sheet 21 will lie on the upper duplicate check or orderslip 19, while the carbon sheet 22 will lie between the said upper duplicate order-slip and the order-slip next below the same. Thereupon in the use of the book the front cover-section 16 will be opened and the salesman will turn the plate 20 carrying the duplieate order-slips to the left and then turn the top original check upwardly against the. cover-section 16, whereupon the'plate 20 will.

be returned to its position over the section 15 and the said original order-slip which had been turned upwardly against the cover-section 16 will be turned downwardly to lie upon the top carbon sheet 21 inthe' position shown in Figsl and-2. The said" original order slip thus exposed and which for special identification I nmnber maybe written on and the writing will transfer through to the upper andnext adjacent duplicate order slips 19, which may then be removed or allowed to remain on the rings 24. The original check 50 written on may also be allowed to remain on its rings 23 if desired, since with the construction shown any one of the original order-slips may be placed on the top carbon sheet, so.that the original order-slips 18 may be used one after another in succession and allowed toremain on the rings 23 orsaid' slips may be used in any order desired without detaching them from said rings. For illustration, if it should be desired to use one of the middle. order-slips 18, it would simply be necessaryto throw the upper half of the set of original sired, and-- may be turnedback under the order-slips against the cover-section 16 so that the order-slip required might-be exposed and placed on the set of duplicate order-slips. The duplicateorder slips may alsobeused one after another in succession or in almost any other order desired, and they all may be'left on the rings 24, if decarbon sheets as frequently as it might be desired -to add to orders already taken. For illustration, if it should be desired to add to the order represented in Fig. 1, after said order had been apparently closed and other duplicate order-slips made use of, the two duplicate order slips represented as in use in Fig. 1 may be restored to their position below the two carbon sheets and the original order slip, shown in Fig. 1, restored to its position and thereupon any additional data could be added to the original order-slip and transferred to the two duplicate orderslips.

I do not limit my book to the use of two carbon sheets 21, 22,.since I will only use two carbon sheets when two duplicates 'of the order are desired. When only one duplicate is necessary, only one carbon sheet will be made use of.

The present invention embraces certain improvements on the book shown in my aforesaid Letters Patent No. 897,245, dated August 25, 1908. In the said patent I show a carbon holder plate and a set of duplicate order-slips as strung on rings at the left hand edge of the bottom cover-section. I have discovered, however, that the carbon holder plate supporting the duplicate checks must be hinged in a very firm manner to the bottom cover-section, so as to prevent any swiveling or twisting action of said holder plate, and in the present instance I firmly hinge the plates 20, 28 together and freely hinge the duplicate order-slips to the carbon holder plate by the rings 24, thus independently hinging the carbon holder plate and duplicate order-slips.

In some uses of the book it may be desirable to hinge the duplicate order-slips at their'left hand edge to the left hand edge portion of the carbon holder plate 20 in lieu of at the lower-edge of said plateyand to provide for such hinging of theduplicate to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A manifold sales-book comprising a back-section, a set of original order-slips secured at the upper end thereof, a plate hinged at its left hand edge to the left hand edge of said back-section so as to be swung from off said section, a set of duplicate order-slips mounted on and hinged at their lower ends to the lower end of said plate, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate slips, said original order-slips being secured by means adapting them, without detachment, to be independently placed on said carbon sheet on the duplicate orderslips; substantially as set forth.

A manifold sales book comprising a metal plate 28, a set of original order-slips secured at the upper end of said plate, a metal plate 20 normally over and hinged at its lefthand edge to the left hand edge of' said plate 28, a set of duplicate order-slips mounted on and hinged to said plate 20 so as to be swung from off the same, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate slips, said original order-slips being secured by means adapting them, without detachment, to be independently placed on said carbon sheet on-the duplicate order-slips; substantially as set forth. A manifold sales-bookcomprising a back-section, a set of original order-slips secured at the upper end thereof, a plate hinged at its left hand edge to the left hand edge of said back-section so as to be swung from off said section, a setof duplicate order-slips mounted on and hinged to said plate, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate slips, said original order-slips being secured by means adapting them, without detachment, to be independently placed on said carbon sheet on the duplicate order slips, and said plate being slotted at its upper end to receive theupper end of said carbon sheet and provided with a folded pivoted plate clamp to engage the opposite faces of the end of said plate and secure said sheet; substantially as set forth.

A manifold sales -book comprising cover-sections hinged together, a set oforiginal order-slips secured. on the upper end of the back cover-section by means adapting them to be turned to lie upon either ofsaid' sections when the front-section is opened from the back-section, a plate hinged at its left hand edge to the left hand edge of said back-section so "as to be swung from off the' same, a set of duplicate order-slips mounted on and hinged at one edge to said plate, and

A manifold sales book comprising cover-sectionshinged together, a set of original order-slips secured on the upper end of the back cover-section by means adapting them to be turned to lie upon either of said sections when the front-section is opened from the back-section, a plate hinged at its 1 left hand edge to the left hand edge of said back-section so as to be swung from oil the same, aset of duplicate order-slips mounted on..and hinged at their lower ends to the lower end of said plate, and a carbon slieet 80 cate order-slips mounted on said plate, and

11. A manifold sales-book comprising cover-sections hinged together, a set of original order-slips secured on the upper end of the back cover-section by means adaptin them to be turned to lie upon either 0t sai sections when the front-section is opened from the back-section, a plate permanently hinged at one edge to one edge of said backsection so as to be swing from OH the same, ase-t of duplicate order-slips mounted on said plate, means secured to and carried by said plate for detachably receiving in a hinged manner said set of duplicate orderslips whereby said set becomes secured at one edge to said plate, and a carbon sheet on said duplicate order-slips; substantially as set forth.
