IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-ATTACHMENTS FOR WATCH-CHAINS.

The Schedule referred to in these'Letters Patent and making part of the same.

Protector; and I do-herehy declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing,-

Figure 3 is an elevation of the interior portion of the protector.

Figure 4 is an elevation of the protector closed, as applied to a watch and chain, the pocket being shown in red lines Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.

Experience shows that watches are often injured by being accidentally drawn out of the pocket, by the guard or chain becoming caught as the person moves about, and thereby jerking the watch out of the pocket, sometimes breaking the chain or, guard, and at other times injuring both guard and watch. Watches are frequently stolen by parties seizing the guard in a crowd, and jerking the watch out of the pooket'and breaking'the guard, and fleeing before the owner recovers from his surprise.

My invention is a self-acting protector, that becomes operative to. hold the watch in the pocket as soon as the watch-guard or chain is subjected to a. pull or jerk. The protector, however, is not operative when it or the watch is taken hold of by the fingers in removing the watcll'from the pocket.

My invention consists in a slide, with expanding grapples that ordinarily remain in the case of the protector, but which are thrown out by the movement of the slide when the same is drawn on by the chain or guar In the drawingit represents a case or cylinder, of suitable size, and more or less ornamental.

The drawing shows the parts in a larger size than usually required.

At one end of this case is an eye, b, to connect to the ring of the watch, or to an intermediate swivel or link.

Within the case a, is a slide, 0, with a ring or book, (I, at one end, and a series of joints, 1? '1', near the other end, connecting to the slide a series of grapplingpoints, 0 e, that extend toward the ring it, but they stand slightly diverging from the slide 0 when in the case a, the upper ends of said points being below the surface of the end of the case a, or nearly so, in order that the points maynot become caught in the pocket, or penetrate the fingers, under ordinarycircumstances.

The case a is constructed so as to allow the slide 0 and points 0 c, to move therein freely, and, when the slide 0 is pulled out, the pointse diverge, as seen in fig. 1, so as to penetrate the fabric of the pocket or garment, and effectually prevent the watch being drawn out of the pocket.

It will be understood that the slide c is pulled partially out of the case a byseizing the chain, or subjecting it to any sudden jerk, and thereby the penetrating points are thrown out, and, entering the fabric of the pocket or garment, retain the watch, protecting the same from injury or loss, and, to prevent the slide moving too'freely, I provide a friction spring at f,

either upon the slide or acting against it.

The penetrating points are separated from the fabric by drawing the same out backward upon grasping the watch, and are closed into the case by pushing the slideback to place.

When in the pocket, as illustrated in fig. 4, the pro tector remains the same as any part of the chain, until the points are thrown out by a pull on the chain or guard.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

The watch-prptector, formed of the slide 0, points 0, and case a, in combination with the chain or guard, as and for the purposes set forth.
