Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. MEHRER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,960, dated September 12, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. MEHRER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Attachment for Watch-Chains or Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accoi'upanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved device for attachment to a Watch, to be carried in the pocket with it for preventingit, by means of hooks, from being picked out, said hooks being concealed in a case, and being' thrust out into the clothing if the chain or guard which is attached to the protector be suddenly jerked.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the case when in the normal condition. Fig. 2 is another sectional elevation, showing the position when the hooks are thrown out; and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, showing the hooks partly thrust out.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a hollow cylinder, case, or sheath, with closed ends, of oval or other shape. It has preferably four long slots, B, for the hooks, and two, C, for the pins D, which secure a sleeve, E, upon it, and connecting said sleeve to a disk, F, within the case, said sleeve being employed for forcing the hooks in after being forced out. These latter slots have a notch, G, at the lower end for locking the sleeve down when it is not required to have the hooks act, the said locking being accomplished by turning' the sleeve to bring the pins D into the notches. The hooks H are pivoted to a disk, I, fixed in the upper part ot' the case. The disk F is connected to a stem, K, slidin g' through one end ofthe case, and having the watch-chain or guard connected to the upper end at L. M is a spiral spring on the stem, between disks Fand I, foi-forcing the disk F and the sleeve E down to force the hooks in. The hook N, at the lower end of the case, is connected to the watch. The spring forces the disk F down, carrying the sleeve E with it, and the latter forces the hooks in the case so that the points will not project beyond the lower edge of said sleeve, as shown in Fig. l, in which condition the protector may be carried in the pocket conveniently, but a sudden jerk on the watch-guard will draw the disk F up against the hooks and force them out into the clothing, so that the watch cannot be drawn out of the pocket. It is intendedto have the spring of such strength that the drawing of the watch from the pocket moderatelyr by the person carrying it will not force the springs out.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the slotted case, sleeve E, hooks H, sliding disk F, stem K, and the spring M, all substantially as specified.
CHARLES XV. MEHRER. Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, T. B. Mosman.
