BOX-OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented se t. 7, was.
Application filed August 14, 1908. Serial iilo. 448,612.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it. known that I, HARRY F. VVrrTIo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city,
Openers, of which the following is a speci- This invention relates to devices for opening receptacles, such asboxes or cans con-' taming shoe polish, stove polish, baking powder, and other ingredients for which it is essential to provide a tight closure, and the object of the invention is to provide a member constructed of a single strap of metal having a lip portion engaging the inner and outer edges of the cover and being bent outwardly to provide a lip and having a top portion adapted to extend over and engage the top of the cover of the box, thus providing an eflicientrfinger hold whereby the cover may be readilydisehgaged from the box. h l
To these ends the'invention resides in the novel construction of box cover openers, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, is a perspective view ofan ordinary metal. box and closure therefor bein with the improved opening device; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view upontheline 2-2 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings the nu provided with an annular head or depression 3, adapted to'scrve as a stop for the edge of the side wall of the cover 2. r
The improved receptacle opener is con-- 7 structed of a single band or strap of metal,
State of Maryland, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in- Boxinner wall of the side of Figure 1 I provided' and is provided with a top portion 4, extendmg a suitable distance beyond the edge of the box and then bent upon itself and ex- -HALF T0 GEORGE tended at a slight inclination toward the outer side of the cover. The strap is then extended downwardly along the side of the cover and is bent around the edge of the cover and extended upwardly adjacent the the cover a suitable distance. a
- -With' a receptacle opener constructed as above described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be seeii that the devlce not only engages the inner and outer faces of the side wall of the cover and provides an .extendedfinger hold, but that the top wall'4 securely engages the'top of the cover an tends to press the portion of the device engaging the edge of the side of the lpover into'more secure engagement therewit The device is preferably constructed of a resilient material, and may be readily detached from the cover should it be desired, but which may also .be retained upon the cover as a permanent member. I
Havin thus :fully described the invention what is c aimed as new is:
The combination with a metallic tacle and a cover therefor, of a cover 0pening member constructed of the inner and outer faces ofthe side 0 the cover and being bent outwardly to provide a lip and having atop portion adapted to extend over and engage the to of the cover.
Intestimony whereof I at x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
