WILLIAM WOLFGANG MEYER, OF STEWART, MINNESOTA.
END-GATE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM VVQLFGANG lvlnrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stewart, in the county of McLeod and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Endtate Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to end gate fasteners, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and eflicient device of this character designed to dispense with the usual threaded fastening means and adapted to quickly lock and release an end gate from the side boards of a vehicle.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims with out departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of a vehicle showing the present invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is av detail ver tical sectional View of the fastener, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastenerdetached.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, there is shown a wagon body including the usual side boards 11 and an end ate 12 therefor. The end gate 12 is provided with vertically extending cleats 13, and these cleats are provided with alining passages 14. The side boards 11 are also provided with passages 15, and these passages are arranged in alinement with the passages 14 formed in the cleats 13. A horizontally extending tie rod 16 is arranged with portions disposed in the passages 1a and respectively, and upon one end, this rod is provided with a head 17 for engagement upon the outside of one of the side boards 11, as shown. The opposite end of this tie rod is flattened and provided along opposite edges with teeth or serrations 18. The side boards 11 are each provided with metallic rub plates 19, and these plates are arranged to surround the passages 15, as shown.
Removably engaged with the serrated or toothed end 18 of the tie .rod 16, there is Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 29, 1908.
FASTENER.
Patented Sept. '7, 1909. Serial No. 455,361.
shown a slidahle block 20 as shown in Fig. 5, and this block consists of vertically extending spaced alls 21 and 22 and a connecting bottom 23. The bottom is provided with a plurality of teeth 24, and these teeth are arranged for engagement with the serrations or teeth 18 upon the end of the rod 16. Between the walls 21 and 22 of the block 20, there is pivoted as shown at 25 a dog 26, and this dog is provided with a head 27 which is arranged to engage the teeth 18 upon the upper edge of the rod 16 when in position, and this dog is further provided with a manipulating finger-piece 28. A coil spring 29 is carried within a socket formed in an upper cross lug of the block 20 as shown in Fig. 4, and this spring is arranged to bear at one end against the under side of the finger-piece 28, as shown, whereby the head 27 of the dog is normally tilted to ward the teeth 18, the head being sustained in a spring held position.
A lever 30 is pivotally connected with the block 20 as shown at 31, and this lever con sists of the spaced cam-heads 32 which are disposed at opposite sides of the block 20, and this lever is provided with the extended lever portion 33, as shown. The lever is slotted as shown at 34, and this slotted portion is thus arranged to straddle the block 20.
In use, the rod 16 is engaged in the outer passage in one of the side boards 11, and this rod is forced through the passages 1a which are formed in the cleats 13, and the toothed or serrated end 18 of the rod 16 is finally forced through the passage 15 in the opposite side board 11. The block 20 is then arranged upon the toothed end of the rod 16, when the lever 33 is carried into an upright position. In carrying the lever downward the side boards are jammed toward each end of the end-gate. The dog 26 during this operation is engaged with the teeth 18, and in this downward movement of the lever it will be seen that the cam-heads 32 will e11- gage the metallic plate 19. Then it is desired to remove the end-gate the lever 30 is turned to disengage the heads 32 from the plate 19 whereupon the block 20 is free for disengagement from the outer toothed end of the tie rod 16.
WVhat is claimed is:
1. In combination with a wagon boX including its end-gate, of a rod engaged with the end-gate and with the side-boards, the rod having an outwardly extending toothed portion, a block slidably arranged upon the toothed portion, a spring-pressed pivoted dog carried by the block for engagement at times with the toothed end of the rod, and a cam-lever carried by the block and arranged to engage one side of the box.
2. The combination in an end gate, of a tie rod having an enlargement at one end, and oppositely positioned edge serrations at the other, of a block having an inner serrated bottom, a spring pressed dog carried by said block adapted to engage one edge of said serrated rod, said block being arranged to be removably engaged upon the serrated end of said rod, and a cam lever secured to said block.
3. The combination with an end gate, of a tie rod having an enlargement at one end, an oppositely positioned edge serration at the other, of a block having an inner serrated bottom, a spring pressed dog carried by said block adapted to engage one edge of said serrated rod, said block being removably secured to the serrated end of said tie rod, and a lever having one end forked and provided with two cams pivotally secured to said block.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM WOLFGANG MEYER.
