FIELD AND JOSIAH ANDERSON,
ALFRED ANDERSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR TO VERNON BUTTER.-
OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
MECHANISM FOR OPENING AND CLOSING SLIDING DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
Application filed. April 19, 1909. Serial No. 490,815.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED AND RSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of I-Iennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Mechanism for Opening and Closing Sliding Doors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the This invention relates to a mechanism for opening and closing sliding doors, and has for its object to provide a simple mechanism of this character which is operated by stepping upon platforms arranged near the door and without touching the door with the hands. This construction also insures that the door will be closed aft-er the person passes through the same, and forthis reason should prove highly desirable.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a side elevation of a door and the door operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1 with the sliding door omitted and portions of the floor and platform broken away to disclose the door operating mechanism; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the door operating mechanism; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken through the sliding door; Figs. 5 and '6 are fragmentary sectional views taken at different points through the bottom of the door and the guide track; and Fig. 7 is a sectional view of a portion of the operating bar and one of its arm engaging members.
In the embodiment illustrated, l indicates a flexible sliding door, which is suitably" mounted upon the rollers 1 in the guide track 2, and is adapted to close and open the door way 3, one side of the door is provided with a keeper 4, to receive the inwardly extending hooked end, as 5, of the vertical operating arm 6, which is pivotally mounted at one side of the partition 7, and extends into the casing or boxing 8, in which the operatingmechanism is contained. The inner end of the operating arm 6, extends through an upright lug 9, arising from one end of a bearing plate 10, and is provided at its extreme inner end with a crank 11, which is connected with the adjacent end of a longitudinal operating bar 12, which is mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing or boxing 8. Rock shafts 13 and 14: respectively are mounted in suitable bearings 15, at each side of the cross piece 16, upon which an adjacent portion of the track is mounted. Each of these rock shafts is provided with a downwardly extending arm 17, which engages or receives opposite extending lateral pins 18 and 19, respectively, projecting from opposite sides of the operating rod 12. The rock shafts are also provided with horizontal arms 20, which extend at right angles tothe arms 17, and receive the hook ends 21, of U shaped arm engaging members 22, which are hinged to the inner ends and bottom faces of the platforms 23 and 24, respectively. These platforms are pivotally mounted upon shafts 25 and 26, by means of the bearing plates 27.
In the operation of the device, when the operator steps upon the outer end of either of the platforms, the operating arm 6, is caused to move the flexible door from across the door way, but upon stepping upon the outer end of the other platform, the flexible door is moved in position to close the door way by the connections hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A mechanism for operating doors comprising a pair of pivoted platform members and connections operable by stepping upon the platform members for opening the door when the operator steps upon the inner pivoted end of either of the platform members, and for closing the door upon stepping upon the outer end of either member.
2. In combination with a door way and a flexible door mounted upon a suitable track and adapted to close the door-way, a vertical operating arm engaged with the door, a longitudinal operating shaft mounted be neath the door, and connected with the inner end of said operating arm, a pair of pivoted platform members and connections between the operating bar and platform members for moving the door away from the doorway when a person steps upon the inner end of either platform member, and for moving the door across the door way when the operator steps upon the outer end of either platform member.
3. In combination with a door-way and a flexible door open the door opening of a boxing beneath the door, a longitudinal operating bar mounted in the boxing, a vertical operating slidably mounted to close and r arm connected with the door and extending into the boxing, a crank at the inner end of said operating arm engaging one end of the operating bar, a pair of pivoted platform members, connections between the platform members and operating bar for moving the door away from the door opening when a person steps upon the inner end of either platform member, and for moving the door across the opening when pressure is brought to bear on the outer end of either platform member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED ANDERSON. \Vitness es RICHARD PAUL, J. A. BYINGTON.
