MEIVIQRANDUIVI ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONES;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 3, 1909;; Serial No. 4 93,61-6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be known that I, GEORGE M. URIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of ltfissouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Attachments for Telephones; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in the art to which it appertains to. make and use the same.
This invention relates toimprovements in memorand'a for telephones.
The object of the invention is toprovide an attachment of this character having an improved construction of roll-holding bracket for holding the memorandum pad.
A further object is to provide an im proved means for hol'ding acarbon sheet for m-anifol d ing purposes.
Another object; is to provide a memorandum attachment having means thereon to hold a list of subscribers and their telephone numbers.
Witliv the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of; construction,combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out, in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the same applied to a telephone; Fig. 2 is an enlarged side View of the attachment, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a top planview of the attachment; Fig. 4. is a vertical cross sectional view on the line 4% of Fig. 8; F ig. 5 is a similar view taken through the carbon paper holders; Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of one of the carbon paper holders.
In the embodiment of the invention, provide a base plate 1 which is preferably formed of heavy sheet metal and has its edges turned down to form flanges 2. Secured to the base plate substantially midway between its ends is an attaching bracket 3, consisting of a metal plate, one end of which projects beyond the adjacent edge and said projecting end is provided in its upper edge with a notch 4 to receive the adjacent flange of the base plate, as shown. The bracket 3 is of greater width at its projectingend and said widened end forms a s'top'to aid in holding the base plate in operative position. The opposite end of the bracket 3 is formed with a right angularly projecting lug 5 which bears against the inner side of the ad jacent flange of the base plate and isriveted or otherwise secured thereto. A similar lug is provided adjacent to the opposite flan e of the base plate and is fastened thereto in a similar manner. Secured to the projecting end of the bracket 3 is an attaching clip 6 by means of which the attachment is secured in place on a telephone stand or other support.
On the upper or outer end of the base plate is secured a bail-shaped roll supporting frame 7, in the opposite side members of which are formed vertically disposed 7 slots 8'to. receive the trunnions 9 of a roller 10 which. is provided to receive the memorandumrollor pad 11. The trunnions 9 are threaded and: on; the same are screwed clamping nuts 12 bymeans of which the roll or pad is held in operative position in the frame. The nuts 12 are preferably in the form of concave disks having milled outer edges;
Secured to the upper cross piece of the which projects down around the outer side of the roll of paper and bears against the same with suflicient pressure to prevent the casual unwinding of the paper therefrom. The spring 13 is. preferably secured to the upper cross piece of the frame by means of a clip or loop 14 of metal struck out from the upper cross piece of the frame, as shown. The inner end of the spring projects beyond the inner side of the frame and is preferably bent around into the form of a spring loop or coil to form a pencil holder 15.
Arranged on the base plate 1 adjacent to the inner side of the frame 7 is a pair of carbon paper clamping strips 16. The upper strip is preferably provided with longitudinal grooves 17 to receive the upwardly struck beads 18 formed on the lower strip thus providing an interlocking engagement between the strips to more securely hold the sheet of carbon paper. The ends of the strips 16 are bent downwardly at right angles and are provided with alining notches to receive clamping bolts 19 which are arranged in apertures formed in the side flanges of the base plate, as shown. The bolts 19 are provided on their outer ends with milled heads and on their inner ends with clamping nuts 20 whereby said heads may be drawn into tight engagement with Patented Sept. 7, 19019:.
frame 7 is a tension spring 13, one end of j the right angularly bent ends of the strips to securely clamp the same against the flanges of the base plate and thus hold the sheet of carbon paper in proper position. When the carbon sheet is used, the paper roll will be double-wound and the carbon holding strips and sheet will be arranged be tween the upper and lower layers of the paper which are drawn over or across the base plate for use. The free ends of the layers of paper are passed beneath and held in position by a guide strip 21 secured to the inner end of the base plate, as shown.
Revolubly mounted between the side members of the frame 7 above the pad or roll 11 is a winding roller 22 upon which is wound a strip of fabric 23 containing the names and telephone numbers of subscribers who are most frequently called for by the user of the telephone. One of the trunnions of the roller 22 projects a suitable distance beyond one side of the frame 7 and on said projecting end of the trunnion is arranged a coiled retracting spring 24, one end of which is secured to the trunnion, while the opposite end is secured in a clip 25 struck out from the adjacent side member of the frame 7. By means of the spring 24:, the roller 22 will be caused to rewind the name strip after the same has been pulled out or unwound to ascertain the number of the party wanted. It will be noted that by means of the pivotal connection of the base plate 1 with the attaching clip 6 that the attachment will readily swing upwardly if'engaged with any object so that should-the telephone be set down hastily after use and the attachment forcibly struck against an object, that said attachment will yield or swing upwardly thus preventing the same from being broken off from the stand. The increased width of the bracket 3 at the attaching end of the same forms a stop to engage the side of the telephone stand and thus hold the attachment in operative position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In an attachment of the character described, a base plate having flanged outer edges, a roll supporting frame secured to said plate, a pad holding roller revolubly mounted in said frame a carbon sheet holder, said holder comprising upper and lower clamping strips having formed therein interlocking beads and grooves, right angularly bent plate engaging ends formed on said strips, said ends having formed therein alining notches, and clamping bolts arranged in said notches and the side flanges of said base plate whereby said strips are fastened in operative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE M. URIE.
W. W. FALLUS.
