Description
J.. STAUBER.
Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
UNITED STATESFATENT OFFICE JAMES STAUBER, QF DE PERE, WISCOI\TSIN.
GUN-LOCK.
Specification of Lett rs Patent.
Pafiented Sept. 7,
Application filed August 6, 1908. Serial N0. 447,260.
T0 all whom @'t mag conqem:
Be it known that I, J AMES STAUBER, a cit-izen of the United States, rsiding at De Pere, in the county ofBrown and State of VVisc onsin, have inventecl -a new and Useful Gnu-Leck, 0f which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to impr ovement-s in gun locks, anc1 has for its Object to provide a means for actu-ating the same.
Another obj ect is to provicle a construction which Will operate to hold the gun locked until in position 130 be fired by the marks A further object is to provide a,construction which can be readily appliedto most forms of breech loading guns und other small arms DOW in, use.
A still further objeet is t0 provide a device which Will be simple in eonstruction, and embodying but few working parts, so arranged -within t-he stock of the gun as t0 positively operate the safety t0 lock and unlock the movement.
With these and other objects in view, 'as Will more fully hereinafter appear the present invention consists in certain novel features 015 construction, ancl arrange1i1ent 0f parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and 'more particularly-pointed 0ut in the appendecl claim. lt being unclerstood tl1at various ehanges in the form, proportion, size, and minor details 01 tl1e clevice may be made without departing from the spirit 01' sacrificing any 01 the arlvant-ages of the inven tion.
In the accompanying clrawing forming paru 01 this speci fication the figure is a side elevation partly in section showing gun equipped with .my device.
Numemls 01 reference are employed t0 clesignate the parts throghout.
In the construction illustratecl a gun of the breecl1 loacling type is shown, provided With the barrels 1, l0ck casing 2, an stock 3. The lock casing 2, is provided 011 its lower side wit-h a trigger plate 4, the latt6r is provided with openings adaptecl t0 receive the trigger blades 5, Whi0h are provided with openings for the reception 01 suitable pins 6, by means of Which they are pivotally connected 130 a; stationary supportwithin the lock casing. Formed in the upper s'1de of the lock casing is an oblong opening inco which is sliolingly fitted a thumb safety 7. This membe1 1s prov1decl at one encl with a roughenecl surface which projects beyond the outer fac6 of the lock casing, and intermediacely proviclecl with lateral arms 8, Which are hel l against the inner -face of fhe lock casing 2,
by means of a pair 01 bow shaped springs portion 10, which projects downwarclly ancl forwardly und is provided with a stepped recess into which fits the upper. end 0f 21 pivotecl locking finger 11, the lower end 01 which direct-ly overlies the trigger blacle 5. The foregoing is a; description 0f a well known type of breech loader, und is given merely f01 the sake cf showing the ap'plication ofthe present inveut-ion thereto, and is loy 110 means intenclerl t0 f0rm part 0fthis applicat-ion.
While a specific form 0f safety slide has been illustratecl and describecl tl1e invention is by 110 means 130 loe limited to this form, since it Will be readily unclerstoocl from what- Will appear later that ehe device may' loe applied to ehe various forms of safety slides, stocks, and lock casings 110W in use.
In carrying out the present invention tl1e stock 3, is provided with an opening 13 extencling longituclinally from the butt encl 12, to a point adjacent its horizontal center. This opening terminares in an opening 14:, 01: considerably lass cliameter extending throughout the entire length of the stock, and terminating in the lock casing 2. From the foregoing it can be readily seen that the stock is provicled with a longitudinal bore having an annular shoulcler 15, at the junctu1e of the openings 13, and 14:. The butt 16 0f the stock is depressed as usual and provided with the but-t plate 17, having an intermediate opening 18, of less diameter than, the opening 13, and in direct alinement with the latter as illustrated in thefigure. A suitable operating bar, o1 rocl 19, is 01 a length slightly greateyhan the length of the stock 3, ancl is 01 a si to slidingly fit within the opening 14, anal project into the lock casing 2, und is rigiclly connected to the depending finger 10, 0I' the safety slide. The opposite encl of tlhe rool 19, extends t0 21 point adjacent the outer terminal of the enlargecl opening 13, and is provicled With an elongated but-ton 20. The latter l1as at 011e end a shoulder 21, of a, size to slidingly fit within the opening 13, while the reduced ortion extending away from the shoulder 21, enters t he opening 18, in the butt plate 17. Thus it Will be seen that outward movement of the button and rod beyond the butt plate is prevented by the shoulder 21. The length of ehe button 20, is such that when the shoulder 21, abuts against the inner faee 0f the butt plate 17, ehe outer end 22, of the button Will lie slightly within the p'lane 0f the opposite corners 23, of the buht. The function 0f this construction is to guard against movement of the button 20 when the corners 23, come in contact with the ground.
In order that the shoulder 21, 1nay be kept in contactwith the inner face 0f the buttplate 17, und the parts maintain the relative positions as illustrated, a he1ical spring 24, is provided. This membe1 is of a diameter to snugly fit within the opening 13, and of a length sufiicient to extend from the shoulder 15, to the Guter terminal of the said opening. Thus it Will be seen that when the parts are in position as illustrated the spring 24, will tend to force the button outward.
In fhe use 0f the d wice, (it being understood that the parts occupy the osition shown in the figure), when the marksman r-aises the gun to his shoulder in the uct of taking aim, the natural inward ressure due to such movement will be su cient to force the button 20, inward against the action of the spring 24, this inwarcl movement 0f the button and spring carries with it the rod 19 the inner end of which forces the safety s1ide forward causing the de pending finger 11, to rock on its pivot and rise from engagement with the trigger blade 5. The trigger may now be pu1led. When the gun is lowered the spring 24, Will return the parts t0 their normal 01 locked positions.
hat is claimed is:
In a fi1e-a1m, the combination with the stock, und a trigger, 0f asafety slide, ehe said slid3having a downwardly and forwardly projecting finger for1necl with a stepped recess, a pivoted locking finger seated in the said recess, the lower end of the finger engaging with the trigger blade, whereby t0 prevent movement 0f the trigger, and a spring-pressed 1'0d connecfed with the finger f the sl ide und slidable in t-he stock, the said rod projecting ab one end beyond the butt of the stock, movement of the rod in 0ne direction serving to swing said locking finger out of engagement with said tr 1 ge r blade.
n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my Signature in the presence 0f two witnesses.
