Description

N. P. ALSTON.
CASE FOR WHIPS 0R LIKE ARTICLES.
' Patented Sept. 7, 1909.
JNVEN T a/e. jlfF/I Z 5Z0. BY
- A TTORNE Y.
NICHOLAS F. ALSTON, 0F INEZ, NORTH CAROLINA.
CASE FOR WHIPS OR LIKE ARTICLES.
Application filed May 25, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS F. ALsToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inez, in the county of WVarren and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for Whips or Like Articles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a case for whips or the like and more particularly to a device of that class for conveniently carrying a number of sample whips, or like articles, the respective ends of which vary in diameter; the object of my invention being to provide a case having a base end of substantial dimensions for receiving the butt ends of a number of whips and tapering toward the opposite end so that the contracted, or lash ends, of the whips are confined to prevent their becoming broken or misshapen.
In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved detail of structure which will presently be fully described and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like ref erence numerals refer to like parts through out the several views, and in which Figure I is a view, in top perspective, of a Whip case constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is a bottom perspective view of same. Fig. III is a similar view of a modified form of case.
Referring more in detail to the parts :-1 designates the body of the case, the end 2 of which is preferably square and the bot tom 3 rectangular throughout its length,
while the sides 4 taper from the base to the lash end 5. Hinged to the body 1 is a rectangular lid 6 having a hasp 7 adapted for cooperation with a lock 8 carried on the front of the case.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. '7, 1909.
Serial No. 434,837.
9 designates auxiliary hasp members adapted for cooperation with the brackets 10 on the case front for strengthening the ends of the cover 6 when closed, and 12 designates a handle that is attached to the case front, and by means of which the case and contents are carried.
In Fig. III I have shown a modified form of case, in which both the top and bottom members, as well as the sides, taper from the base to the lash end of the case, forming a structure having the appearance of a frustum of a pyramid; such structure being convenient for carrying whips or like articles which may be assembled around a central post 13 that may be permanently secured to the case ends, or loosely posited within the case; the modification being otherwise similar to the form shown in Figs. I and II.
WVhen the case is in use, whips or like articles may be placed therein, either loosely or assembled around a central post, the enlarged base end accommodating the butt ends of the whips while the lash ends are adapted to fit snugly within the contracted end when the lid is closed, thereby preventing free movement of such lash ends, while the case is being carried from place to place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A case for whips or like articles having one end of substantial area and an opposite end of less area, side and top and bottom members connecting the end pieces and each tapering from the end of greater area to the end of less area, and a central post carried by the end pieces and extending centrally through the case, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS F. ALSTON.
