LOGKET.
To all whom it may concern:
it known that i, Hanvnr E. Annals, a citizen ol he United States of America, residing at Hockingpor'z, in the county of Athens and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acoinpanying drawing.
This invention relates to a locket or like article of manufacture, A articularly designed for campaign purposes, but adaptable for use by members of lodges, secret organizations and as an advertising medium.
My invention aims to provide a locket that can be suitably ornamented and embellished in accordance with ones esthetic taste. The locket is constructed, whereby the picture, emblem or insignia carried thereby will not e exposed, unless desired, the
ot' the locket having full and complete control over such exposure.
its a national political campaign novelty, the lot'lict is designed whereby a partisan can wear the same on the lapel oi his coat without disclosing to the public the photograph or representation oi his candidate or revealing the politics of the wearer.
is a locket for use by members of secret organizations, lodges, and as a novelty for advertising purposes, the locket can be made of various forms and designs to attract the attention of the observer and arouse a desire for investigation.
T he many other advantages of the locket will be apparent from the following description, wherein the detail construction of the same is set forth.
Referring to the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a front ele-.
vation of a locket constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same in an open position, Fig. 3 is an edge view of the locket, Fig. i is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the locket in closed position, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the locket in an open position.
To put my invention into practice, I pro vide a disk 1 which may be of metal or a similar durable material. Upon the front side of this disk is printed or otherwise marked the representation of the political candidate, an emblem, an insignia, motto or advertisement. The disk is provided with two opposite] y disposed lugs 2 and 3, the lug Specification of Letters Patent.

2 constituting one of the hinge members of a hinge 5 by which a concave lid or cover 6 is .ltached to the disk 1. The other lug 3 serves functionally as a catch for engagement by a resilient latch at carried by the lower edge of the lid or cover 6.
The disk 1 has its rear face formed with an annular flange 7 which projects inwardly and has its free edge bent inwardly, as clearly shown in 5 and G, to form an annular recess between the inturned edge of the flange and the rear face of the disk. This construction may be obtained in any preferred manner, as by reaming out the cess, in which case the inturned portion of the flange would not be actually turned in but the result would be a construction in which the flange has its free edge turned inwardly.
For the purpose of causing the lid to open when the catch thereoi is released, I provide a spring, said spring having an intermediate portion bent to form a loop 9, the remaining portion of the spring being in the term or two curved arms or portions 8 which lie within the recess, as shown in Figs. a, and (3, the loop 9 extending in a direction at sub stantial right angles to the plane of the remaining portion of the spring and passing through an opening l formed in the disk 1 adjacent the point of hinge connection 5, the loop being of a width substantially equal to the length of the opening et this particular construction retaining the spring against a movement in the recess of the disk. The loop 9 not only extends through the opening 4t but is of a length to permit a portion thereof to project beyond the plane of the disk 1 a distance suliicient to provide a portion thereof in constant contact with the inner face of the lid during each of the movements of the latter, such movements carrying the contact portion of the loop from one side to the other of the plane of the axis of the opening l, this result being obtained by reason of the fact that said projecting portion of the loop normally extends in a plane angular with respect to the plane of the axis of the opening, thereby placing the normal position of the lid-contacting portion of the loop on one side of the plane of such axis, this normal position being between the plane of the opening-axis and the point of hinge connection, and supporting the lid in its open position; when the lid is closed, the loop is mused to move to the' opposite side of the plane of the opening-axis, thereby placing an ii'icreasing tension on the loop. By this construction it will be understood that the spring required may be very light in charaeter, the range of movement of the contact portion of the loop being of suflicient length to cause the necessary n'loveinents of the lid without liability of an abrading action of the loop and lid such as would be provided by a spring of considerable tensional or torsional pressure.
In order that the locket can be secured to a persons garment, I provide the rear face of the disk 1 with a conventional form of pin 10. The front side of the lid or cover can be provided with the national colors, as indicated at 11, these colors either being attached to the lid or cover by a piece of fabric, or printed directly upon said lid or cover.
it is thought from the illustration of my invention that the manipulation of the lid or cover will be clearly understood, especially the manner of opening and closing the cover or lid (3 of the button, to expose the portrait, emblem or printed matter carried by the disk 1,
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. In combination, two members hingedly connected and movable to a position in sub-- stantially parallel planes, one of said mean bers having a symbol-receiving race and also having an opening therethrough adj acent the point of hinge connection, rear fr of said latter member having anon flange formed with an annular recess adjacent the plane of said face, and a sping ha ving its ends lying within said recess and having an intermediate portion bent to form aloop, said loop extendin tl'irough said opening in a direction atsubstantially right angles to the plane of the remaining portion of the spring and projecting beyond the plane of the spring-carrying member, said projecting portion normally extending in a plane angular with respect to the plane of the axis of the opening and positioned to retain the opposing member in one extreme of its length of movement, said loop being of a length to provide a portion in contact with the inner face of the opposing men'iber during each of the movements of the latter, said movements causing the contacting portion of the loop to pass from one side to the other of the plane of the axis of the opening.
2. In combination, two members hingedly connected and movable to a position in substantially parallel planes, one of said mem bers having a symbolsreceiving face and also having an opening therethrough adjacent the point of hinge connection, the rear face of said latter member having an annular flange projecting from said face, said flange having its free edge turned inwardly to provide an annular recess adjacent the plane of said face, and a spring having its ends lying within said recess and having an intermediate portion bent to form a loop, said loop extending through said opening in a direc tion at substantially right angles to the plane of the remaining portion of the spring and projecting beyond the plane of the springcarrying member, said projecting portion normally extending in a plane angular with respect to the plane of the axis of the opening and positioned to retain the opposing member in one extreme of its length of movement, said loop being of length to provide a portion in contact with the inner face of the opposing member during each of the movements of the latter, said movements causing the contacting portion of the loop to pass from one side to the other of the plane of the axis of the opening.
3. A locket comprising a disk provided at the upper edge of its periphery with a lug and at the lower edge of its periphery with a catch, said disk being provided at a point. directly beneath said lug with an opening, a lid hinged to said lug and provided with a latch to engage said catch, an annular flange carried, bf the rear face of said disk, said flange having its edges turned to provide an annular recess between the inturned edge of the flange and the disk, a spring for opening the lid when said. latch is released from the catch, said spring embodying body-portions seated in said recess and a loop portion projecting through said opening in the disk and engaging the inner face of said lid, said loop being of a length to contact with the inner face of the lid during each of he movements of the latter, such movements of the lid carrying the contacting= portion of the loop from one side to the other of the plane of the axis of the opening, and a securing n'lelnber secured to the rear face of said disk.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
