W. H. PLANE.
' v EAT PIN HOLDER;
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 8, 1908.

orricn I WEI-LEAH E'LANE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOZS.
HAT-ZEN I-IGLDEB.
To all whom may concern:
lie it known that 1, WILLIAM ll. PLANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,
have invented a certain new and useful Hat- Pin Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus adapted to be arranged in hats worn by women,
said apparatus being designed to protect-- said hats against hat pins used in the same.
It is a known fact that hats worn by women at the present time are usually provided with no means for protecting or guarding the same against hat pins usedin them, and on this account in a very short period of time the crown of a hat becomes pierced at so many difi'erent points that it not infrequently tears, resulting in the hat becoming so unsightly appearing that it is no longer fit to wear.
It is the object of my invention to provide an apparatus which may be easily and readily secured in the ordinary hat, the same being of such a design as to be adapted to form a seat for or adapted to receive stated, and one which will be of simpleconscruction, hence, of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
My invention will be more readily understood b reference to the accompanying drawings ,orming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a hat, the same being provided with the preferred form of my apparatus, Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the sleeve-like, hat pin-receiving member embodied in the preferred forin bf my apparatus, a port-ion of the same being broken away so as to better illustrate the construction of the same, Figs. and i are end elevations thereof, Fig. 5 1s a ver- Specification of letters Patent. v Patented Aug. 31, 1909. Application filed September a. lace.
Serial No. asnsse. 1
tical transverse section taken on the line a1aa of Fig. '2, Figs. 6 and-7 are! enlarged front and side elevations, respectively, of"
the stiffening disk used in conjunction with the sleeve-like member shown in Fig; 2, Fig. 8 is an enlarged side elevation of the hat pin point directing and'retaining member embodied in the preferred form of my invention, Fig. 9 is a vertical'transversesection taken on the line g y of Fig. 8, and Figs. 10 and 11 are enlarged front and side elevations, respectively, of the stiffening disk used in conjunction with. the member shown in Fig. 8. -Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates awtubular-or sleeve-like member, the same being formed of any suitable sheet metal preferably tin or aluminum. Said member is n'i'a-de of any suitable length and of an inside diameter slightly greater than the diameter of an ordinary hat pin. The rearward extremity of said member 1 isrorided with an annular outwardly exten 'ing flange portion 2, said flange being of any suitable width. Said flange portion is provided upon its periphery with a plurality of spikes 3 preferably equally spaced apart thereon, and formed integrally therewith, the same being substantially parallel and horizontally extending. Said spikes are adapted to be inserted into the vertically disposed portion of the crown of a hat. In order to facilitate rigidly securing said member l in'a hat as mentioned, I employ-a collar or disk member 4 provided with the cen trally positioned perforation 4 for obvious reasons, the same being adapted tobe arranged upon the inside of the crown of a. hat directly opposite the member 1. Said disk is provided with a plurality of radially positioned perforations 5, the same being so positioned as to be adapted to receive the spikes 3 of the flange portion 2. By bendin said spikes back 11 on the inner surface 0 said disk 4, it is o vious that said sleeve 1 maybe rigidly and securely fixed in position. In order that a hatpin ma be readily inserted in said sleeve, I on argethe outer oiening as at 6, as clearly shownin Fig. 2
ion
or the accompanying drawings. However,"
said provision is not essential, as it is obvious that it is only to avoid wasting of time in locating the opening in the sleeve 1 that the latter is so constructed.
7 indicates a funnel. or cqnically formed member, the same being provide withthe extremity thereo ment with the member 1 for obvious reasons,
the same being funnel formed for the obvious purpose of insuring directing the point of a hat pin which has been passed through .c the member 1 into the apertures. Said preferably formed integra member 7 is preferably adapted to be rigidly secured in place by collar or, disk member 10, the same being Zrovided with a central aperture 11 for obvious reasons'andwith the parallel horizontally extending spikes 12, said spikes being adapted to be inserted into the vertically extending portion of the crown of a hat and passed through apertures 13 provided forthe reception of the same in the flange portion 9 of the member 7. It is obvious that by bendin said spikes back upon the inner surface 0% the flange portion 9, that is, in.a manner similarto securing the member 1 to a hat'as before described, said member 8 may curely fixed to a hat.
In order to facilitatesecurely holdinga hat pin in place in my apparatus, I rovide the member l-with suitable spring 0 asping means, and as I have shown in the drawings,
preferably form the member l with inwardly extending spring arms 14 diametricall opposite each other, said spring arms eing ly with said member 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings.
I do not wish to be limited to the just described specific construction of said spring clasping means'however, as I might employ separate spring arms and fix the member. 1 without departing from the spirit 'also be, rigidly and se same in said changes made in the arrangement. of parts and etails of construction, as for example, said member 1 might be made, in a more ornamental form than that showniand de the same might be flower, etc. or other scribed, as for instance, formed in the shape of a I s apparatus, I do not wish to be limited thereto as there may be of such minor changes mightbe made'withtion.
claim as new, ers Patent, is:
In a deviceof the class described, a member adapted to be Secured tothe outer face and desire to secure by Let;-
of the crown of a hatand comprising a tubular portion of substantially uniformdi: ameter throughoutand having an internal diameter slightly greater than that oil-the hat pin, a dlsk formed on 'one end of said out'depar'ti'ng from the spirit of my inven Having described my" invention 7 what I i i tubular portion and integral therewith, se-
curing prongs on said ,disk, an outwardly flared portion at the op 70, posite end ofsaid tubular portion from said disk and integral therewith and oppositely disposed sprin arms integral with said tubular portionan struck inwardly therefrom intermediate said disk and said outwardly flared portion, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name tothis specification of two subscribing witnesses.
