Patented Aug. 31,1909.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
amumms. WASH funn es LUDwic, or NEW YORK, n. Y.
To all whom alt/may comer Iii. i
Be it known that I, JULIUS VLUDWIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of-New York and State i of New York, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Extensible Beds or Couches, of which the .following is a specification.
My present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in extensible beds or couches ofthat type wherein two; bed-sections are employed and connected tO-.
gether in such manner that one section may be folded over upon the other or the two sec tions may be caused to assume positions side by-side whereby to provide a double bed.
The prime object ofthe' invention is to.
provide a; bed for couchgof the character stated wherein thetwo bed-sections are provided with complementary. hinge members having provision for ready separation when the sections are in a predetermined position in order that the .two bed-sections may be readily detached and used separately as single beds; may be joined side-by-side' and utilized as a double bed, or one section may be superposed upon the other to form a couch.
closely packed for shipping or oses.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an extensible bed or couch wherein the several parts or members are of SlII1; ple but durable and cheap construction thej arrangement being such that all said parts or members may bereadily cleaned.
In order to enable others to understand,
make and use my said invention I will now proceed to describe the same in detail referp Specification-of Letters Patent. Applicationfi1edJ'anuary30 1908.
" IEX'rENsInLE BED. on oonon.
PatentedAug. ,31, .1909. Serial No. 4is,495.
Like reference. numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of-drawings.
The main bed-section consists of the two end members each comprisin' a U-shaped bar, rod or tube having the en rails 10, and legs 12, said members being detachably joined together by means of the two side rails 13,"each of which is provided at its opfposite'ends with curved plates 14:, having open slots 15," which take over headed studs 16,: secured to the legs 12. By some such construction, (and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to that shown) theseveral parts of the bed may be readily .taken apart forshipping or storing.
Secured to each end rail 10, by means of bolts 'orrivets 17, is an angle iron 18, one web of which at an end of the said iron is projected upwardly and carries onemember of a hinge. 7 5
In the instance shown this member consists of a circular opening 19, having a lateral slot or way 20, communicating therewith as more clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The
other or extensible bed section is also made up of "the 1 two U-shaped end members as shown, each having the end rails 21, and legs a j 22, said legs being connected by the detach- A further object of the invention is to provide a couch or bed of the character. de-; scribed that may be easily and quickly taken apart and the several members or units storage pur-Q able side rails 23, having the curved plates 14:, and slots 15, which take over headed studs 16, carried by the legs 22, as previously An angle iron extends transversely between and connects the legs 22, of each U- shaped end member, the horizontal web 2 1 of said angle iron extending under the ends of the legs as more clearly shown in Figs. 2
and 3. The vertical web 25 317310116 end of each angle iron is extended outwardly as shown and projects beyond the plane of the .horizontal web 24, said projecting end being provided with a hinge member which is complementary to the hinge member on the main bed section. This hinge member in the instance shown consists of a laterally projecting flat shank 26, having a disk-like head 27 at its end as more clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
By the peculiar construction and arrange- 1 (extended, and in. fact owing to the position of thelateral slot or way 20, relatively tothe fiat shank 26, the bed sections can be separated only when these two parts, are brought into alinement. The bed sections may, how:
ever, bereadily separated when one section is brought into a predetermined position relativelytothe other, andcwhen separated the sections may bemoved about 'and'placedas desired for independent use.
By reason of the peculiar structure of the bottom frames and the manner of attaching the "wire fabric thereto it will be seen. that thesesections, when one is superposed on the other, he in substantially contact relation, thus providing an actual double bottom when the device is being used as a couch, or singlebed. i V
A'ny: suitable construction of springs'may begemployed with the bed sections, although ;I;- refer the construction shown in Fig. 1,
of the drawing which consists of a strip of woven wire 28,,for each section, each strip having its opposite ends provided with a metallicbinding 29,. The woven wire strips 1 are seeured under tension to the angle irons carried by the bed-sections by means of stout coiledsprings 30, the opposite ends of which are" provided with hooks which take into apertures in said angle irons as clearly gshown in the drawing. 7
mB-yfthe construction therein shown and 1 describedl have provided a combined extensible bed, or couch, the sections of which may be joined and folded one upon another; may
., f be opened andpositionedside-byrside to form a double bed, or they may be readily disconnect-ed 'and used independently as separate beds-MM W hat I claim is:
In airairticle of furniture of the character described comprising a substantially stationary and a movable section, said sections comprising each a pair of U-shaped metallic bars, a pair of horizontal bars C(iiinecting each pair of said U-shaped bars, an'angleiron bar riveted to each of said U-shaped bars and having itstinner portion immediately adjacent the U-shaped bar wherebythe angle-bars of the movable section maybe readily superposed upon the angle-bars of the stationary section, the adjacent portions of said angle-iron bars providing hinges whereby the sections are connected, a fabric connecting the angle-bars of each section, the fabric of the movablesection adapted to overlie and contact with the fabric of the stationary section and provide a substantially double bottom therewith when the article is used as a couch, and to lie on an even plane nesses.
