IMPROVED HOP-POLE SHARPENER.
The Schedule referred to in these Letter-a Patent and. making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN V. BARNS, of Triangle, in the county of Broome, in the State of New York, have invented-a new and useful machine, which I call the Revolving Hop-Pole Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My machine is for the purpose of sharpening hoppoles, stakes, and posts, consisting of a conical cylinder, with a slot in the side toreceive the cutter. The cylinder is fastened to an arbor that moves it, which arbor is also furnished with beltpulley, balance-wheel, and buzz-saw. This combination, resting upon a suitable frame, is run by any motor equal-in power to a to which a belt may be attached.
I construct my hop pole sharpener in the following I cast a conical iron cylinder, g, with an opening in the side to receive the knife-blade 1), fastened' to a wrought-iron arbor, bolted to cylinder y, contaiuihg the set-screws i t, moving in slots of the blade I), rendering it adjustable. The knife I), I curve on the edge one-half inch, sharpen the poles to a point, and bevel them back about eighteen inches. I make the cylinder proportionately large for stakesand posts.
The cylinder g is connected at its closed end to a common wrought-iron arbor, h, by face-plates c 0, on
frame, 0, and works in metallic boxes,
' low cone-shaped cylinder g,
the end of each, bolted securely together. The open end is steadied by a boxing, at, fitted nicely to it.
The arbor his also furnished with a belt-pulley, j, over which runs the belt that drives the sharpener, with a buzz-saw, (I, used for cutting off old poles, stakes, and posts, and for squaring the ends of new ones, with a balance-wheel e to regulate the motion, the whole of which running-part rests on a wooden near the extremities of the arbor h.
The pole, stake, or post is held to its place on the sliding frame m by a lever-clamp, a, which is worked by hand, (I think it more practicable to work it by hand, as it has to be changed so often.) The pole, stake, or post is moved into and out of the sharpener by the person who lays it on the frame m, sliding on the rods ll, steadies it during the process, and lays it away when sharpened.
Having described my improvement,
W'hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is- I The arrangement, upon a suitable frame, of theholand its interior projecting blade I), saw d, sliding grooved frame and lever 11, all
the parts being constructed as described.
STEPHEN V. BARNS.
