To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH J. IWAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of Wood and State of Visconsin, have invented new and` .useful inproveinents` 1n Tables, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to` dining and'other tables or articles of furniture for Vessels, the object of the invention being to provide a novel construction of table or article and controlling means therefor, whereby the body or top of the table will be maintained in a horizontal position irrespective of the movements of the vessel Vin all kinds and conditions of weather.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein. fully described, illustrated and claimed.

Referring to the drawings, l designates the body or top of the table, which may be of any preferred form and construction. This top is supported by legs 2, which are suitably secured at their upper ends in sockets in the top or otherwise fastened thereto,
and are secured at their lower ends in sock-` ets in a suitable base 3, which may be the floor of the room or deck of the vessel.
Tn the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the legs 2 consist of columns of rubber yor other suitable elastic or resilient material, which are adapted to yieldingly connect the table top with an underlying portion of the vessel, to permit the necessary restricted relative movement between the table top and vessel and adapt the top to maintain a horizontal position. If desired, however, the legs may be made of some other suitable resilient material.
In the modification shown in Fig. l, I have illustrated a form of leg 2a which may be effectively employed, the leg being composed of a coiled strip of spring metal forming in effect a coiled spring leg which is secured like the leg 2 to the table top and deckof the vessel.

which is arranged centrally in the space below the top l and between the legs 2. This weight is suspended from a pair of inverted U-sliaped brackets 5 and 6, which are secured at their end to the under side of the top 1 and having their depending portions arranged in crossed relation and connected by a screw or other suitable fastening 7,

The weight acts as a plumb, serving to maintain the top l in a horizontal position at all times irrespective of the movement of the vessel, the legs 2, by reason of their elasticity, or resiliency, adapting the table top to move relatively tothe surface 3 to which the legs are secured under the action of the gravity of the weight et, as will be readily understood.
In order to effectively control the movements of the table and prevent excessive vibration of the table top when the vessel rolls or pitches, a flexible connection 5 is provided between the top and a superposed portion of the vessel, such as the ceiling (3 of the state room or compartment of the. vessel in which the table is situated. This flexible connection is shown in the present instance in the form of a coiled contractile spring which is adapted to yield freely in all directions to permit of the proper movement of the table top under the action of the weight while offering sufiicient resistance to prevent the top from vibrating unduly when the vessel rolls and pitches to a high degree in heavy weather.
From the foregoing description, the construction of my improved leveling table for ships will be readily understood and it will be seen that it provides a table of this character, which is simple of construction and may be manufactured at a low cost.
fhile the invention is illustrated as applied to a table, it will be understood that it may also be embodied in like articles of ships furniture, such as berths, etc., and that it may also be applied to ambulances, for the purpose of maintaining "the body of the device in a horizontal position irrespective of the movements of the vehicle on which it is mounted. These embodiments are held to fall within the spirit and scope of my invention as described and claimed.
