BOTTLE.
speciflcationioi Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24, 1908. Serial 110.429, 104.
To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. SMITH States, residing at Sharon,'in the county. of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania,-have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionrelates to bottles and clo surestherefor, and the object. of'the invention is to provide a bottle with a cap orclo-.
sure which is adapted to remain a permanent part of the bottle so as to prevent the fraudulent refilling of .the bottle and to provide -means for detecting attempts at refilling the bottle with imitationsor inferior liquid.
With these objects in view the invention A resides in the novel construction and arrangement of elements, hereinafter fully described and claimed. Q
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the upper portion of a bottle constructed in ac.-
cordance with the present; invention and provided with the improved ca or closure. Fig. 2 isa horizontal 'sectiona .VlBW. upon the line 22 fof Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the upper portion of the bottle. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the cap or closure.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 designates the body of ,an ordinary bottle. This bottle'lisprovided with a neck 2, constructed of thicker material than the-body so as to' provide greater strength and render the neck less liable to breakage. The neck 2 is flared toward the body of the bottle, as clearlyindicated in the figures of the drawing, and the neck is provided with an annular groove or recess 3. This groove or recess 3 is preferably rounded, and is adapted for the reception of a split spring ring 4'. a The ring 4 isadapted to be encompassed within the groove 3 when the ring is. compressed. Y The numeral 4 desi ates the cap or closure for the bottle. T is cap 4 is constructed substantially as ahood and hasits inner face provided with an elongated annular cut 'away portion 5, while the lower edge of the closure isreduced and flared to correspond with the flared neck of the bottle 1. .The closure is also provided with a plurality of vertically extending cutaway portions tents of the bottle is '6, adapted to weaken the closure and to render it easilyliable to breakage.
In sealing a bottle. constructed in accordance with the present invention, the bottle having been filled and its mouth secured with the ordinary cork 7, the split ring 4' is positioned within-the recess 3 of the bot; tle neck, and the cap 4 placed over the neck until the annular cut away portion 5 coacts with the ring, which immediately springs from the inner wall of the recess 3 andengages with the cut away portion 5, so as to securely retain the cap in engagement with the neck.of the bottle, it being understood that the ring 4 is of sufiicient thickness to be partially retained within the recess-3.
When it is desired to open the bottle, the cap 4 is pressed downwardlyagainst the neck of the bottle and the weakening depressions 6 effectively assist in breaking the cap 'so as to allow the withdrawal of the cap from the bottle neck, when access to the conm'oval of the cork 7. i
Havin thus fully described the invention -what is c aimed as new is: i
The combination with a neck constructed stronger than the remainder of the bottle, said neck'h'avin a reduced annular groove, a resilient sp it ring for the groove, a cap constructed of breakable material for the neck. of the bottle, said cap being provided with aninternal annular cut awa portion adapted to engage the split ring an having its lower portion weakened and engaging the portion of the neck of the bottle aring towardthe body thereof, the top wall of the cap being ositioned a distance away from the top 0 the bottle neck, so that the cap may be forced downwardly uponthe-neck to allow the split ring to ride in the cutaway portion and to cause the weakened portion of the cap to be separated from the-remainder thereof to allow the said cap to beremoved from the-bottle neck.
& In testlmony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence-of two witnesses.
