EDWIN F. DRAPER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
ROLLING-HOOP.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, EDWIN F. DRAPER, a citizen of the llnited States, and a resident of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a ne i and useful Tmprovement in Rolling-Hoops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys, and more particularly to rolling-hoops, and it has for its principal object to facilitate the skilful propulsion and manipulation of the same.
The invention consists in the parts and in the arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur, Figure l is a side elevation showing a hoop having a manipulating device embodying my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale. taken on or about the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. is a detail perspective view of a desirable form of loop member for the manipulating device.
The hoop 1 according to my invention is preferably of round section. The manipulating device comprises a handle Qto which is attached a loop member 3 having an idler or roller 1t mounted therein and which is preferably grooved to conform approximately to the cur ature of the hoop section. This loop member is preferably formed of a single piece of stout wire. Its intermediate portion is substantially rectangular to accommodate the roller 4: and is looped at each side, about the middle thereof, to form eyes or bearings 5 for the ends of the spindle (3 of said roller. The outer end portion 7 of the loop extends a short distance beyond the roller -1t and is slightly contracted and curved to conform to the curvature of the hoop section which it is adapted to loosely and partially surround. The ends 8 of the wire are brought together at the rear end of the loop 3 so as to constitute a shank or stem for attachment to the handle member 2.
In practice the manipulating device may be placed at various angles with respect to the hoop and the idler or roller 4: may be Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 2'7, 1908.

applied against the hoop at various points, whereby the hoop can be skilfully propelled and manipulated. The roller & while serving as an antifriction bearing for the manipulating device, also has a pleasurable and instructive or fanciful effect upon the mind as it rotates in a direction opposite to that of the hoop when pressed against the same while in motion. T ie curved end portion 7 of the loop 3 serves to prevent the hoop from running away from the manipulating device and assists in guiding or steering the hoop.
Obviously, the roller -l may be ornamented and otherwise made attractive in appearance, if desired, and the entire device may be otherwise modified without departing from my invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction and arrangement shown.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a rolling hoop of round section, of a manipulating device comprising an elongated handle portion and a loop portion comprising a single piece of wire curved at its middle to correspond to the cur ature of the hoop section so as to partially surround the same, and being of a slightly larger diameter, said curved part being contracted at its outer end, the end portions of the wire being brought back parallel to form the sides of the loop and looped intermediate the length thereof to form alining eyes, and being brought together to form the inner ends of said loop which constitutes a shank for attachment to said handle portion, and a grooved trolley wheel mounted within said loop and having its spindle se cured in the eyes formed in the sides of said loop, the peripheral flanges of said trolley wheel being adjacent to the contracted curved end portion of the loop.
In witness whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses this 25th day of April, 1908, at St. Louis, Missouri.
