Description

N. M. PURVIANCE.
MAGAZINE TACK HAMMER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 27, 190s.

"entran sfrafrns rafrnivfr NATHAN M. PURVIANCE, OF SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR T TIME SAVER COMPANY, 0F SPOKANE, WASHINGTON.
MAGAZINE TACK-HAIMMER.
To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that l, Narr-IAN M. PURvI- ance, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Yashington, have invented a new and useful Magazine Tack-Hammer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to magazine tack hammers and the like and is more particulai-ly an improvement upon the construction described and claimed in an application filed by me in the United States Patent Oflice 0n Oct. 9, 1907, Serial No. 396,683, said application having issued as Patent No. 897,399,
of September' lst, 1908.
The object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the contents of the magazine are prevented from clogging prior to their discharge into the feed channel of the hammer, thus rendering the tool more efficient in operation than heretofore.
A further object is to so dispose the magazine of the hammer relative to the feed channel as to increase the compactness and strength of the tool.
.Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure l is a longitudinal section through a hammer embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a section on line A-B, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on line (1 -D, Fig. l. Fig. 4t is a section on line EMF, Fig. l. Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sections through modified forms of hammers. Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section through a portion of a hammer having a modified form of magazine.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, l designates the head of a hamnier, the same being provided with a stem 2 the end of which is concaved or beveled as vshown at 3 so as to produce a deflecting tongue it, the end of which is preferably brought to an edge as indicated particularly in Fig. l. rlhis stem is secured in any preferred manner within a jacket 5 preferably Speceaton of Letters Patent.

in the form of a tube folded upon itself at an intermediate point so as to form a magazine compartment G and a distributing compartment 7, the same being arranged paralle'l to each other and communicating at one end as shown at 8. rEhese two portions of t-he tube may be fastened together by brazing or soldering them, or in any preferred manner.
rlChe inlet end of the magazine 6 is arranged adjacent the hammer head l and is provided with a closure 9 preferably hinged and designed to be held in closed position in any suitable manner as by means of a spring catch l0.
The distributing compartment 7 is slotted longitudinally as shown at 1l, said slotted portion being spaced from the stem 2 so as to form a channel or guideway 12 which eX- 70 tends downward to one end of the hammer head and terminates in resilient fingers 13 only one of which has been shown in the drawings but which are disclosed in the apr plication before mentioned and constitute no part of the present invention. Suitable means such as spring controlled pawls let may be mounted in the stem 2 and project into guideway l2 for the purpose of pre'- venting return movement of tacks and the like. These pawls have also been described and shown in the aforementioned application.
ln using the device herein described the closure 9 is opened and the tacks or other 85 devices to be contained within the tool are placed in the magazine 6 after which the closure is shut. By inclining the tool the tacks can be caused to enter the compartment 7 at the point of communication, 8, and the 90 points of the tacks will pass through the slot 11 while the heads of certain of the tacks will pass beyond tongue 4L and into the guideway 12. More or less crowding has heretofore been produced at the point where the tacks pass beneath the stem 2 and in order to overcome this objectionable feature the tongue 4 has been provided so that those of the tacks which can not pass under the stem will be deflected upwardly by the tongue and the beveled end 3 of the stem. By arranging the magazine parallel with the distributing compartment the handle can be made of ordinary length without reducing the ei'liciency of the tool.
While in Fig.v 1 the magazine has been shown placed above the distributing compartment it is to be understood that'if' pre- 'erred it can be located at one side thereof' as shown at 15 in Fig. 7. Moreover, insteadof forming the magazine and distributing compartment of a tube having three flat faces as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4 it can be made of a tube having one flat facel constin tuting contacting surfaces of the magazine and thc distributing.y compartments respectively, as indicated in Fig. 6.
.As shown` in Fig. 5 the slot 16 through which the tacks project may be provided witlrguard flanges 17. rFliese flanges have alsobeen shown in F ig.-7.
Vliile itis desirableto arrange the maga'- zine upon or at one side of the distributing compartment it can, it' preferred, be located at one end of said compartment as shown at 18 in which event said magazine is produced by utilizing a liared or bell-like extension provided with a spring controlled closure 19. Vhile this construction is effective it is not as desirable as the others because it requires the lengthening of the handle.
If desired, the magazine G andy the distributing compartment 7 may be'fmade of separate pieces and connected by a return elbow so as to form themeans of communication 8 between the two. If desired the opening into the magazine (3- may be'locatedv at that end where the'magazine and the distributing compartment communicate',- which would allow the opposite end to bel con- `tinued on to the head if so desired to secure tlie'proper balance of thetool.
What is claimed is 1. In a magazine hammer the combination with' a' head and a stem extending therefrom ,of a longitudinally slotted jacket snrronnding the stem and constituting a distributing compartment, there being a passage between the stem and the slotted por.- tion of the jacket and opening at one end into the-distributing compartment, that end of the stem within the distributing com-v partment being beveled to constitute a defleeting tongue.
2,111 a magazine hammer, the combinationvwith ahead and a'stem extending. there`v from gf of ai longitudinally slotted jacket surrounding the stein and constituting both ay distributing compartment and handle, there being a passage bet-Ween the stem and the slotted portion of the jacket, that end of the stem within the distributing compartment beingf beveled toconstitute a. dctlecting tongue, anda magazine outside of andv parallel with the jacket,.said magazine opcn ingat one end into onc end ot the'distributing compartment, said: magaziney having a; closurel adjacent the'head.
In testimony that I claim' the foregoing asmy own, I 'have hereto affixed my signa-- ture inA the presence ofl two witnesses.
NTHAN PURVANCE.
