- My present invention relates to an improvement on the conveyer of smoke and cinders for locomotives which I have described in my patent No. 114,605, dated May 9, 1871.
- This improvement consists in combining with said conveyer one or more exhaust-fans in such a manner that the discharge of smoke and cinders through the conveyor is facilitated without interfering with the draught of the fire.
- A designates a locomotive-engine, which may be of any well-known form and construction.
- the smoke-stack B of this locomotive is provided with a cap, 0, forming a chamber on the top of said smoke-stack, from which extends the conveyer D.
- This conveyer extends down close to the track, and if the locomotive is in motion the current of air entering through openings in front of the cap 0 carries the smoke and cinders down into the conveyer.
- the cap 0 obstructs the draught of the fire, and I have therefore found it necessary to connect with the conveyer D a fanblower, E, which revolves in such a direction that it acts as a suction-blower, and that it facilitates the passage of the smoke and cinders through the conveyer, while it increases, at the same time, the draught of the fire in the boiler.
- the suction-blower E receives its motion from one of the drivers of the locomotive either by a belt win any other desirable manner, and if the conveyer is carried back to the rear of the train, which may be connected to the locomotive A, one or more additional fan-blowers may be inserted in the extension of the conveyer.
Description
AUGUSTA M. RODGERS.
Improvement in Conveyors of Smoke and Cinders for Locomotives. I No 119,790, Patented Oct. 10,1811,
zl Mz: %11 4,
UNITED STATES AUGUSTA M. RODGERS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CONVEYERS OF SMOKE AND CINDERS FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 119,790, dated October 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTA M. RODGERS, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oonveyers of Smoke and Cinders for Locomotives and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, which drawing represents a sectional side view of this invention.
My present invention relates to an improvement on the conveyer of smoke and cinders for locomotives which I have described in my patent No. 114,605, dated May 9, 1871. This improvement consists in combining with said conveyer one or more exhaust-fans in such a manner that the discharge of smoke and cinders through the conveyor is facilitated without interfering with the draught of the fire. V
In the drawing, A designates a locomotive-engine, which may be of any well-known form and construction. The smoke-stack B of this locomotive is provided with a cap, 0, forming a chamber on the top of said smoke-stack, from which extends the conveyer D. This conveyer extends down close to the track, and if the locomotive is in motion the current of air entering through openings in front of the cap 0 carries the smoke and cinders down into the conveyer. But in practice it is found that the cap 0 obstructs the draught of the fire, and I have therefore found it necessary to connect with the conveyer D a fanblower, E, which revolves in such a direction that it acts as a suction-blower, and that it facilitates the passage of the smoke and cinders through the conveyer, while it increases, at the same time, the draught of the fire in the boiler. The suction-blower E receives its motion from one of the drivers of the locomotive either by a belt win any other desirable manner, and if the conveyer is carried back to the rear of the train, which may be connected to the locomotive A, one or more additional fan-blowers may be inserted in the extension of the conveyer.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of one or more fan-blowers, E, with the conveyer D, which extends from the cap 0 on the top of the smoke-stack of a locomotiveengine, substantially as shown and described.
This specification signed by me this 15th day of August, 1871.
