n I a l m J UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM LOIVE, OF GLENDIVE, MONTANA TERRITORY.
RIVET SET AND HEADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,779, dated December 18, 1888.
Application filed October 11, 1888. Serial No. 287,818- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM LOWE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Glendive, in the county of Dawson and Territory of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rivet Sets and Headers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rivet sets and headers, the object of the same being to provide an improved implement for setting and heading rivets; and it consists in providing the ordinary rivet set and header with a side slot or recess which connects with the setting-aperture, so that the tool may be employed to set rivets of different lengths, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an improved rivet set and header constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
A refers to the body of the implement, which is preferably made of steel or other hard metal, and is provided on its face with a recess, a, and adjacent thereto with a perforation, b, which extends from the face through the lower end of the tool to the lower portion of a slot, B. This slot B is formed in one side of the body of the implement, the rear wall thereof being curved and the side walls straight, as shown.
Heretofore rivet sets and headers have been made simply of a straight piece of metal, one end being provided with a perforation and adjacent thereto with a recess. This form of implement is objectionable, inasmuch as rivets are liable to become jammed in the perforation and cannot be removed except by drilling, and the sides of the implement being be readily driven out without having recourse to drilling. The slot, being to one side of the implement, prevents mistakes being made between the setting and heading apertures, as
the slot in the side of the implement can be seen and felt. The implement is also lighter, and as it requires less material'can be furnished at less cost.
Having thus described my invention, I do not wish to claim, broadly, a.rivet set and header having a recess and perforation, as such are in every-day use; but
*hat I claim as new, and desire to-sccure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a rivet set and header consisting of a body portion, A, having a slot, B, and a perforation extending from the base thereof to the face of the implement, substantially as shown.
2. The improved rivet set and header consisting of a body portion, A, provided with a slot having an inclined rear wall and straight side walls, a perforation, Z), extending through the lower end of the implement and communicating with the slot, and a recess, a, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM LOWVE.
