Description
D. J AOKS. TRACE SUPPORTING BAOK BAND BUCKLE.
APPLIOATION FILED JUNE 7, 1909.
Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
gvwewtoz I awe (M @Xhbneooeo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DOW JACKS, OF MARIANNA, ARKANSAS.
TRACE-SUPPORTING BACK-BAND BUCKLE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Dow J ACKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marianna, in the county of Lee and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace- Supporting Back- Band Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness buckles, and pertains especially to the class of back band buckles having trace chain carriers.
The object of the invention is to provide a combination back band buckle and trace chain support or carrier of such novel and peculiar construction and arrangement of parts as to be capable of attachment and adjustment to bands of various size, thickness and character.
A further object of the invention is to provide an adjustably hinged back band buckle having a hook pivoted to one member of the buckle and cooperating with a hook upon the other member for looking a trace chain' to the buckle.
Other objects, advantages and improved results will be found in the practical use or application of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the buckle. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the buckle open. Fig. 3 is a top view of the buckle as it appears in Fig. 2. Fig. A is a plan view of one corner of the buckle before it is bent into posit-ion.
i The same reference numerals denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The buckle is preferably composed of sheet iron or thin metal and comprises two separable plate parts adapted to be pivotally locked together.
The back plate or part 1 of the buckle has an opening 2 for a back-band 3, a ridge or projection 4 struck up out of the plate and cooperating with a like projection A on the other plate part 5 forms a grasp for the band 3; the upper corners of the plate 1 are formed by wings 6 adapted to be bent atright angles to the plate on the dotted line aa Fig. l, to form a flange, and said wing has a lip 7 adapted to be bent into position on the dotted line 6-6 Fig. 4, to form a brace for catches 8 adapted to be bent into position on the dot-ted line c0 Fig. 4, and having a series of slots 9, leaving a space Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 7, 1909.
Serial No. 500,516.
between the catches for the band 3, and an outwardly turned hook 10 depends from and is formed on this plate.
The plate 5 has curved cars 11 projecting from its upper edge and forming pivots which fit the catch slots 9 for adj ustably pivoting the two plates together.
A hook 12 is pivoted at 13 to the lower portion of the plate 5, and is worked on its pivot for sliding it into the hook 10, to form a loop for the trace chain 14.
It will be seen that the plates are pivotally adjustable by means of the pivot-catches and the pivot ears to clamp bands of varying thickness or character, so that a portion of an ordinary bag or sack may be folded lengthwise and the buckle clasped thereto, or any other convenient and suitable article may be used as a back band in connection with this buckle.
In connecting a trace chain, one of its links is slipped over the hook 12 and the latter turned into the hook 10, then the link is slid over the coupled hooks. This arrangement not only carriesthe chain, but the chain prevents unlocking of the hooks.
It is obvious that in attaching the buckle to a band, the plates may be disconnected and connected by means of the peculiar pivot connection.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A back band buckle comprising two separate plates adjustably pivoted together, a fixed hook on one of said plates, and a hook pivoted to the other of said plates and adapted to be swung into the other hook to form a loop for holding a trace chain.
2. A back band buckle comprising two separate plates each having grasping edges, adjustable pivots at the ends of the plates for varying the space between said edges, a hook projecting from one of the plates, and a hook pivoted to swing into and out of the other hook for holding the plates in closed position.
3. A back band buckle comprising a back plate having a hook, pivot catches formed on the plate, a front plate pivoted in the catches, and a hook pivoted to this plate and adapted to swing into the other hook for holding the plates in closed position.
A. A back band buckle comprising a back plate having a hook, slotted catches at each end of the plate, a front plate having ears Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
justable in the slots for pivoting the plates together, and a hook pivoted to and depending from this plate and adapted to swing into the other hook for locking the plates 15 together and for forming a trace carrier.
In Witness whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
