BOILER-FLUE CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 27, 1907. Serial No. 4%,062.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JOHN /VIEQH'MANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and Im roved Boiler-Flue Cleaner, of which the fol owing is a. full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved boiler flue cleaner, arranged to insure a thoroughremoval of scale, and to provide the desired flexibility for the cleaner to readily pass through bent or curved tubes, fines or pipes.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, ,which will be more fully described herein after and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of'the invention.
is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a art of this specification, in which similar ciaracters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement, parts being broken out; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same; Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear end view of the revoluble cutter head; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the same on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3,-
and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the initial cutter on the line 5+5 of Fig, 2'.
The cutter-head A of the boiler flue cleaner is rotated by a turbine B of any approved construction, preferably, however, such as shown and", descrihed in the application for Letters Patent of the United States, No. 376,866,1"1ledhy me Q11 April 2 9, 1907. v The cutter-head A is mounted on a frame or spider C, having a front plate C, a rear plate C and bars C connecting the plates i), C rigidly with each other. The front plate C is provided with a forwardly-extending centrally-arranged screw rod G 'on which screws the hub D of an initial cutterD, havin a plurality of radially disposed cutting blades D curved forwardly and inwardly, to bring the forward ends of the cutting blades to a common point, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. The rear plate is provided with rearwardly-extendiiig lugs C engaged by a pivot pin E also assing through the member of a universal joint having a pivot pin extending, through the said member E and through lugs ll formed on the forward end of a motor 'or turbine wheel l mounted to notches being arranged in s iral form.
Patented Aug. 24, 1909.
K and K arranged longitudinally and extending with their rear ends in elongated slots (l formed in the rear lateC of the frame or s i der C, as plain indicated in Figs. 3 ans. On the spinc les K, K and K are mounted torotate loosely conicalshaped cutters L, L, U, extending between the plates 0 and C with their a extends for ward, and having lengthwise-r isposed cutting edges L notched transversely in such a manner that the notches L follow a spiral line, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and '2. B the arrangement described eachcutting e ge L bf a cutter L, L or L is divided by the notches into teeth, the teeth of successive cutting edges L breaking joint, owing to the The pitch of the cutting edges 3 for the several cutters L, L, L is different, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, to provide different teeth along the cutting edges of the several cutters, with a view to insure thorough cleaning of the flue when the device is in use, it being understood that successive teeth on each cutter and successive teeth on adjacent cutters act on different parts of the tube, to insure thorough'cleaning thereof. The free or rear ends of the spindlesK, K, K are ressed outward by the action. of a spring N, t e outward movenientbeing limited by the end wall of each of the slots C in the plate C to prevent the cutters from cutting into the.
tube. The spindles are normally held in an outermost position by the segmental spring N, fitting into notches K formed on the rear terminals of the spindles arran ement-described the spindles l K, K and their cutters L, L and L are free to yield inwardly against the tension of the spring N, thus protecting the cutters L, L, L against undue and quick abrasion when striking extremely hard matter which has to be cut out gradually. It will also be no.- ticed that by the use of the spring, the cutters yield and hence are not liable to stick in ,fiauiztws of 6611!. 2J farm 11d P1 'lgthwisa arranged m 92 notched" @1163 sf .416 Said cutters being; 1
